AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

The U.S. Bank Smartly Visa Card is primarily valued as a high-tier 'catch-all' rewards card, offering up to 4% cash back on all purchases for users who maintain $100,000 in assets with the bank. While it is considered a 'game changer' for simple cash-back strategies, it is frequently criticized for its outdated banking technology, slow transaction processing, and the significant requirement of moving large sums of capital to U.S. Bank. Recent sentiment is mixed, with several users reporting that the card has been 'nerfed' or that newer versions are less competitive than the original 'V1' iteration.

Pros

  • Industry-leading 4% cash back on all spending for top-tier asset holders.
  • Simplified 'catch-all' rewards structure for non-category spending.
  • Competitive entry-tier rewards (2.5%) with a relatively low $5,000 asset requirement.
  • Works as advertised for basic cash-back accumulation.

Cons

  • Requires $100,000 in assets (brokerage, IRA, or savings) to unlock the maximum 4% rate.
  • Poor user interface and 'embarrassingly bad' banking technology reported by users.
  • Includes a Foreign Transaction Fee (FTF), making it poor for international travel.
  • Slow transaction clearing (up to 5 days) and points are not visible until the monthly statement.
  • Reports of relatively low initial credit limits compared to other premium cards.

Caveats

  • Users mention a 'Smartly V1' and suggest that recent changes may have reduced the card's overall value or eligibility.
  • Maximizing rewards requires moving significant liquidity or investments, which may not be ideal for those preferring other brokerages like Fidelity.
  • Points remain in a 'pending' status and are not tracked in real-time within the app.

Best for

  • High-net-worth individuals willing to park $100k in U.S. Bank or its brokerage.
  • Users seeking a single-card strategy for all non-category purchases.

Avoid if

  • You frequently travel or purchase from international vendors (due to FTF).
  • You prefer modern, high-tech banking apps with real-time rewards tracking.
  • You are unwilling to move your primary investment or savings accounts to U.S. Bank.

This summary uses balanced time weighting with about a 6-month half-life. The evidence is older (median age ~579 days), and users should note that recent comments suggest the product terms may have changed since the initial launch.

It’s a nice card - I’ve been banking with US Bank for almost 20 years and already have 5 cards with them. I PC’d one I didn’t use a lot into a Smartly for the flat 3% but it’s only a gap filler card for non-category spend

I am considering moving $100k over to US Bank for 4% cash back on every purchase with their smartly card.

Between killing the USBAR and nerfing the hell out of the Smartly card, plus now getting rid of Smartly offers, they clearly fell on their face when it comes to profit projections

Smartly - Zero benefits - unless you are shooting for higher than 2% rewards, stay away

3x on all spend intl is in some ways worse then 4x on smartly. At least they had ftf and could get US interchange rates. ... Just thinking that these are the types of things that sunk the smartly so yeah, nerf or cap coming within 2 years I’d guess.

The impact is people that enjoyed getting 4% back on their car insurance through Smartly now can't because people were intentionally running schemes and their investment account no longer qualifies.
