American Express Platinum Card
Reddit take
AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote
The American Express Platinum is widely characterized by users as a 'lifestyle card' or a 'coupon book' rather than a primary spending tool. It is highly valued for its 5x point multiplier on flights and extensive airport lounge access, but its high annual fee requires users to 'jump through hoops' to recoup value via fragmented credits. While some find the credits for Uber, Resy, and Saks easy to use organically, others criticize the card for being overpriced and requiring too much effort to manage.
Pros
- Industry-leading 5x points on flights booked directly with airlines
- Broad airport lounge access, including Centurion and Delta SkyClubs
- Valuable organic credits for those who already use Uber, Resy, and streaming services
- Premium travel perks such as Fine Hotels + Resorts (FHR) and UberOne membership
- Strong customer service and high Sign-Up Bonus (SUB) potential
Cons
- Very high annual fee that is difficult to justify without 'couponing'
- Poor rewards (1x) for everyday spending like groceries and gas
- Frequent reports of overcrowding and long wait times at Centurion lounges
- Credits are highly fragmented (monthly/quarterly) and easy to miss
Caveats
- Often described as a 'sock drawer' card—useful for its benefits but rarely the best choice for daily transactions
- Amex 'once per lifetime' rules and family-based eligibility can limit your ability to get the Sign-Up Bonus
- The 'coupon book' nature means the real-world value is lower if you don't already spend in those specific categories
Best for
- Frequent flyers who value lounge access
- Users who already organically spend on Uber, Resy restaurants, and luxury retail
- Travelers who book high-end hotels through Fine Hotels + Resorts
Avoid if
- You want a simple, single-card setup for all spending
- You do not travel enough to utilize airport lounges
- You find tracking monthly or quarterly credits to be a chore
This summary uses balanced time weighting with about a 6-month half-life. The evidence is older (median age ~310 days), and because credit card benefits and fees are subject to frequent 'refreshes,' confidence is adjusted accordingly.

I've had both for a few years. I'd probably say the Plat provides more overall value (tangible and intangible) for my life.
Parent context: So, I’ve looked at the platinum, especially for its SUB. But as others on this sub mention, it’s like a coupon book. It feels like I’d have to juggle around trying to squeeze every coupon out of it, something I naturally don’t do. It wouldn’t fit my life style, so I don’t have it. If you travel enough to justify an airline card, then you don't need it because you get FF status which is far better than any credit card (I closed my Amex platinum after getting actual Delta Platinum status).
Amex Platinum, and Amex Gold. There's a lot of resy listed restaurants in my local area... The card gives pretty great value to me.
Amex Platinum gives 5x points back if you book direct with an airline; combining that with hotel specific cards might be your best bet. ... Personally I find I get a lot of value from it, but not everyone feels the same.
I have the Plat because of the streaming credit, and resy credit along with Lulu
Plat also gives you UberOne
You only get lounges with the premium cards like AMEX platinum, Venture X, and CSR.
Now I will say this about Amex Platinum - the more I have dug, the more value I’ve found. Being able to walk into Lulu Lemon once a quarter and grab a free hoodie off the clearance rack (for seventy bucks) is pretty cool, as is the legit free dining credit of $100 a quarter for Resy restaurants
In general, when I think there’s a decent chance I’d need purchase or return protections, I use my Amex Platinum. They’ve always made the process super smooth AND for return protection, they’ve never requested the item be sent back to them.
