AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

The Chase Sapphire Reserve (CSR) is currently facing significant backlash from its core user base following a 'refresh' that increased the annual fee to $795. While it remains a top-tier choice for travel insurance and high-value transfers to partners like Hyatt, many users feel the card has transitioned into a 'coupon book' model, requiring effort to track various niche credits (DoorDash, StubHub, Apple Music) to justify the cost. The $300 travel credit remains highly praised for its ease of use, but the overall value proposition is increasingly compared unfavorably to the Sapphire Preferred for those who don't maximize the new premium perks.

Pros

  • Highly flexible and easy-to-use $300 annual travel credit.
  • Industry-leading travel insurance and coverage.
  • Access to high-quality Sapphire Lounges and unlimited Priority Pass visits with a guest.
  • Strongest transfer partner ecosystem, particularly for Hyatt redemptions.
  • Reliable international acceptance with no issues reported by digital nomads.

Cons

  • Significant annual fee increase (reported at $795).
  • Transition to a 'coupon book' style of credits that are difficult or unnatural to use.
  • Reported 'nerfing' of benefits, including the loss of the 3% general travel multiplier in some contexts.
  • Difficult to justify the fee compared to the lower-cost Sapphire Preferred (CSP).
  • Sapphire Lounge network is still geographically limited.

Caveats

  • The card's value is now heavily dependent on utilizing specific partner credits like DoorDash and StubHub.
  • Some users report that 'rich people' or high-spenders may find the time required to manage monthly discounts annoying.
  • Recent applicants have reported being ineligible for welcome offers even if approved for the card.

Best for

  • Frequent travelers who value premium lounge access and top-tier insurance.
  • Hyatt loyalists looking for high-value point transfers.
  • Digital nomads requiring a reliable card for international use.

Avoid if

  • You dislike 'couponing' or managing multiple specific monthly credits.
  • You cannot naturally offset the $795 annual fee through travel and dining.
  • You already have premium lounge access through other cards like the Amex Platinum.

This summary uses balanced time weighting with about a 6-month half-life. The evidence is older (median age ~384 days) and reflects a period of significant transition for the product; users should verify current fee structures as terms for this card have changed recently.

Financially, yes, I’d probably come out ahead with the refreshed CSR or Plat, but I can’t think of a less exciting value proposition.

This is the same year they gave out 100K for the CSP, introduced PUJ, and then raised CSR AF while nerfing benefits... not sure who they're hoping to attract here?

Personally, if it was me I’d downgrade the CSR to the CSP. You keep transfer partners and all with Chase, while still retaining lounge access with Amex. Plus, it saves you near $600 (with the new CSR AF).

If you can naturally get the bonus on CSR it’s pretty worth

The way the current landscape is, I don't see a point in getting CSP or CSR.

Even the newly revamped terrible CSR has direct airline booking with a multiplier.

Now Chase? Wow, they have really jumped the shark this past year. Almost every credit they have (except the free Apple Music, which is cool, and the blanket free $300 travel credit) is a pain in the ass to use.

Coming out of college and getting my first professional job I got the Chase Sapphire Reserve and used that for effectively 100% of purchases.
