Reddit take

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

The Capital One Venture X is highly regarded as a 'no-brainer' premium travel card, primarily because its $395 annual fee is effectively offset by a $300 travel credit and 10,000 anniversary miles. Users frequently praise its simplicity as a 2x 'catch-all' card for non-category spending and its synergy with the SavorOne card. While the requirement to use the Capital One travel portal for the annual credit is a significant point of contention, many find the portal's interface and price-matching features acceptable for the value provided.

Pros

  • Effective -$5 annual fee after the $300 travel credit and 10,000 anniversary miles are factored in.
  • Strong 2x miles earning rate on all purchases, making it an ideal 'catch-all' card.
  • High multipliers for portal bookings: 10x on hotels/rentals and 5x on flights.
  • Access to Capital One Lounges and Priority Pass (though some restrictions apply).
  • No foreign transaction fees and includes Visa Infinite protections.
  • Seamless integration with the SavorOne card to convert cashback into transferable miles.

Cons

  • The $300 annual travel credit is strictly restricted to the Capital One travel portal.
  • Priority Pass benefits have been reduced, specifically removing access for authorized users in some cases.
  • Capital One's approval algorithm is notoriously unpredictable, sometimes denying applicants with high credit scores.
  • Miles may be perceived as less valuable or harder to use effectively compared to competitors like Chase or Amex for some users.

Caveats

  • Using a travel portal means you are booking through a third party (Hopper), which can complicate changes or cancellations compared to booking direct.
  • The 'pays for itself' math only works if you travel at least once a year and are comfortable using the portal for that trip.

Best for

  • Travelers who want a premium card with a simple, high-value 'catch-all' earning rate.
  • Users who live near or frequently travel through airports with Capital One Lounges (e.g., DFW, IAD, JFK).
  • People looking for a low-maintenance 'two-card' setup when paired with a SavorOne.

Avoid if

  • You strictly prefer booking directly with airlines and hotels to maintain status or flexibility.
  • You do not travel at least once per year.
  • You are looking for a card that is easy to get approved for with a thin or very recent credit history.

This summary uses balanced time weighting with about a 6-month half-life. The evidence is based on discussions with a median age of approximately 10 months, which is relatively stable for a long-standing credit card product.

USBAR clearly at a disadvantage (no surprise, Venture X is a great card!)

The capital one Venture X + Savor One is a great setup.

The nice thing about the VX, is it will let you pool your Savor points and make them transferable. If you are comfortable booking in the Capital One portal, then you can earn 10x (hotels) and 5x (flights). That's unbeatable and makes the Gold a hard sell.

My card setup will just be a tad simpler as I'll just use the Venture X everywhere I was using the USBAR.

Overall, I would say that considering your semi-frequent weekend hotel trips, the Venture X is a decent option for you if you don't want to be loyal to any hotel brand and are ok with booking through the portal (with the caveats I mentioned in my first point).

If you use an airport with a C1 lounge then that alone is worth getting the VX. You can use the travel portal or even just use the points to cancel out any travel purchases. Don’t have to use a transfer partner to get the card.

I'd probably replace the Quicksilver with a Venture X to add a Visa into the setup and get 2% on everything

**Capital One Venture X** if you're willing to make sure to use the $300 travel credit annually.

Also the vx is great for lots of your other categories that aren't food or entertainment related.

Parent context: Beware the Venture X. That card requires using Capital One’s portal. I wouldn’t want to do … Reply: I’m pretty anti portal booking myself but I can turn a blind eye with the VX just because they use Hopper so it’s not ridiculously over priced and then I have a 2x catch all after the credit
