American Express Blue Cash Preferred

The American Express Blue Cash Preferred (BCP) is widely considered a premier cashback card for household spending, specifically for its industry-leading 6% return on groceries and streaming. While it carries a $95 annual fee, many users find the cost is offset by a recurring Disney+ bundle credit and solid 3% tiers for gas and transit. However, the value proposition is highly dependent on staying under the $6,000 annual grocery cap and utilizing the specific streaming credits provided.
Pros
- High 6% cashback on groceries (up to $6,000/year) and select streaming services.
- 3% cashback on gas and transit, making it a strong commuter card.
- Recurring Disney+ bundle credit can effectively negate the annual fee for existing subscribers.
- Frequent 'Amex Offers' and sign-up bonuses provide additional value.
- Reliable and predictable credit limit increases compared to some competitors.
Cons
- Annual fee of $95 can be hard to justify if not using the Disney+ credit.
- The 6% grocery tier is capped at $6,000 in annual spend, dropping to 1% thereafter.
- Major retailers like Target and Walmart are typically excluded from the grocery multiplier.
- Lacks the 3% 'online retail' category found on the no-fee Blue Cash Everyday card.
Caveats
- The math for the annual fee often requires a 'break-even' analysis against no-fee 5% cards like the Citi Custom Cash.
- Users frequently discuss a strategy of upgrading and downgrading between the Everyday and Preferred versions to bypass the annual fee.
- The card cannot be downgraded to the Blue Business Plus (BBP) as they are on different product lines.
Best for
- Families with high grocery bills near or at $500 per month.
- Subscribers to the Disney+ bundle (Disney+, Hulu, ESPN+).
- Commuters who spend heavily on gas, tolls, and public transit.
Avoid if
- You do the majority of your grocery shopping at Target, Walmart, or wholesale clubs like Costco.
- You do not use streaming services or the Disney+ bundle.
- Your annual grocery spend significantly exceeds the $6,000 cap.
This summary uses balanced time weighting with about a 6-month half-life. The evidence is older (median age ~400 days), so users should verify current annual fee amounts and specific credit values as card terms can change.

AMEX Blue Cash Preferred - 6% Groceries
if you value the Disney credit, I'd definitely say the BCP is worth holding on its own with no shenanigans.
I got the Amex BCP *specifically* for the streaming benefit. I do a lot of streaming, and it's very worthwhile having that card.
Amex BCP is great if you plan on only having a simple 2-3 card setup. That way you can prioritize using the card more to justify the annual fee.
As far as the Amex BCP goes if that's a card you're interested in, you can effectively eliminate the $95 AF for years, so I wouldn't make that the deciding factor for you.
Amex Blue Cash Preferred (not sure if the $95 annual fee is worth it — the $10/month Dunkin’ credit isn't that appealing to me haha)
Amex has a Blue Business Plus and a Blue Cash Preferred that would better suit your needs for a clear and predictable credit limit. Those cards are comparable to Chase.
Amex BBP + USBAC $0 AF, 2X on everything, 4 PP lounges a year, Global Entry credit etc
Currently using BCP for transit.
Holding an effective no AF BCP for years is pretty fantastic, and it's possible to even come out in the green with an effective *negative* AF (Amex pays you to hold the BCP) based on how lucrative your offers are.
