Pros

• The 599 I think would be the better bet for most people given its warm sound signature
• If you’re not going to buy a dac/amp get the 599 SE
• For me they've been a substantial upgrade after portapro+yaxi.

Cons

• Sennheiser HD599 SE for $90 when on Amazon's promo, or Philips SHP9500 at $50-60 from AliExpress, are both solid picks, with detachable cable which are cheap to replace... Soundwise HD599SE is thicker sounding with more punch in the bass...
• HD599 have smoother treble, but a bit bloated upper bass which can feel excessive or muddy for some people. I would say it is a good sound quality headphone, but I find the stock tonality to be a bit annoying due to that bloat.
• Some may say senhizer hd 599 or 6XX if you're willing to go higher.
• HD599 would be more neutral and plain comparing to X2.
• I'm willing to try the HD599s but I've never found a pair of open backs that were suitable to be daily drivers, because of the aforementioned issues.
