Sennheiser HD 599
Reddit take
AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote
The Sennheiser HD 599 is a popular open-back headphone frequently recommended for its exceptional comfort and warm, natural sound signature. It is widely used as a 'daily driver' for both music and casual gaming, though it is polarizing due to a perceived lack of clarity. While many users love its smooth vocal reproduction and relaxed fit, others find the mid-bass to be 'muddy' or 'veiled' compared to more neutral alternatives like the HD 560S.
Pros
- Exceptional long-term comfort with lower clamp force than many competitors
- Warm, natural sound profile that excels at vocal reproduction
- Easy to drive, performing well even with basic DACs or direct motherboard connections
- Strong durability with users reporting 10+ years of heavy use
- Pleasant imaging for casual gaming and media consumption
Cons
- Mid-bass emphasis can lead to a 'muddy' or 'bloated' sound
- Lacks the high-end clarity and detail found in more analytical headphones
- Soundstage can feel narrow or 'center-focused' for an open-back design
- Polarizing 'veiled' sound signature that some users find muffled
Caveats
- Frequently compared to the HD 560S; the 599 is generally considered more comfortable and 'fun,' while the 560S is more neutral and detailed.
- The HD 599 SE is a common variant that is functionally identical but features a different color scheme (black vs. cream/brown).
Best for
- Casual gaming where comfort is the priority
- Long listening sessions or all-day office use
- Listeners who prefer a warm, non-fatiguing sound over clinical accuracy
Avoid if
- You prefer a neutral, analytical, or 'flat' sound signature
- You are looking for maximum high-frequency detail and transparency
- You are sensitive to mid-bass bloat

Today I wanted to play around with the EQ to kind of get a feel on how I want the music to sound like and now they sound much better than my Sennheiser HD599.
Something like the Sennheiser HD 599 would potentially be a good option. Open headphones will usually give a much better soundstage and sense of space than closed headphones.
The 599 are more full and more comfortable.
HD599 has 2 straight improvements - smoother treble, and better more standing out upper mids which are the weaknesses of SHP9500. However HD599 also has more bass, which makes it sound thicker and more impactful, but also considerably muddier.
Not the biggest fan, but perhaps Sennheiser HD599SE. The treble more extended, but the low end is generally similarly soft, and some of the bloat there hinges on the muddy sound of Koss Porta Pro, while the soundstage and details are straight upgrade.
I generally disagree with people claiming they are bad for fps gaming, and I would say they are not worse than say HD599 which I even saw people claim to be better than HD560 in that regard
If you are coming from KSC75, then you might find HD599 to be too bloated in the upper bass, and even a bit muddy sounding. I'm used to more bassy, yet still neutral, headphones than KSC75, and HD599 just annoys me.
HD598 SE have a slightly bloated upper bass for my taste (but not as bad as HD599)
From my limited experience I would be against HD599 as it has a bit bloated/muddy upper bass which personally annoys me to no end
Another headphone in the price range is Sennheiser HD599SE, although it might depend on whether it is on promo or not. I'm not a biggest fan of it, cause for me part of the bass sound a bit bloated and muddy, but generally speaking it is not a bad headphone, quality of sound is good for the money
