AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

The AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D is widely regarded by the community as the premier gaming CPU, frequently cited as the 'best on the market' for its combination of high frame rates and thermal efficiency. Users report significant performance uplifts in both modern and older, unoptimized titles compared to previous generations. While it carries a price premium and requires the AM5 platform, its improved silicon design makes it easier to cool and more efficient than its predecessor, the 7800X3D. It is also noted for being more capable in non-gaming tasks, though its 8-core architecture remains a limiting factor for heavy professional rendering.

Pros

  • Top-tier gaming performance, often described as the best available CPU for gaming.
  • Excellent thermal management; runs cooler and is easier to cool than the 7800X3D.
  • High power efficiency, with reports of gaming power draw as low as 50-60 watts.
  • Single CCD design ensures all cores have constant access to the extra 3D V-Cache.
  • Noticeable improvements in system responsiveness and minimum frame rates in CPU-heavy games.

Cons

  • High total cost of ownership when factoring in the CPU price and the AM5/DDR5 platform requirements.
  • 8-core count can become a bottleneck for heavy CPU rendering or professional video editing.
  • Diminishing returns for users who are not pairing it with high-end GPUs like the RTX 4080 or 5090.

Caveats

  • Performance margins over much cheaper processors (like the Ryzen 5 9600X) can be small in some AAA titles.
  • Some users report that memory latency differences (CL30 vs CL36) have negligible impact on real-world performance with this chip.
  • The 9850X3D is occasionally mentioned as a superior, albeit likely more expensive, alternative.

Best for

  • High-refresh-rate competitive gaming (e.g., 1080p 500fps).
  • Enthusiasts building high-end rigs with top-tier GPUs.
  • Users seeking a 'buy once, keep forever' long-term gaming investment.
  • Small form factor (SFF) builds where thermal efficiency is critical.

Avoid if

  • Your primary workload is professional-grade CPU rendering or heavy multi-threaded productivity.
  • You are on a strict budget where the price difference could be better spent on a GPU upgrade.
  • You already own a 7800X3D and do not require the marginal productivity or thermal improvements.

My 9800x3d has been under an air cooler for about a year and runs very cool.

If you want it for gaming, 9800X3D. The 96MB L3 cache is that good for gaming.

The AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D is an awesome CPU that pairs well with both the 4070ti and 5070ti, but even a strict generational upgrade to the Ryzen 5 9600X would effectively balance the system.

I found someone a deal the other day that came with the 9800x3d, 32gb ddr5 6000mhz cl30 and x870 mobo and it only cost 12$ more than purchasing a 9600x 32gb ddr 5200mhz cl40 and a b850 mobo seperately.

I believe you should run the CPU until you get aggravated because you can spend 1000 bucks and go 9800x3d 32 GB of ddr5 and you might be like 0-15% faster at 1440p ray traced games.
