AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

The Discover It is widely regarded as a staple 'starter' and 'keeper' card, primarily valued for its 5% rotating cashback categories and its first-year cashback match. Users frequently pair it with other cards to cover gaps in rewards, though some find the manual quarterly activation and lack of control over categories to be a minor inconvenience.

Pros

  • 5% cashback on rotating quarterly categories like Amazon, restaurants, wholesale clubs, and groceries.
  • First-year cashback match effectively doubles rewards to 10% on rotating categories for new cardholders.
  • Highly accessible for students and those building credit for the first time.
  • Transparent rewards tracking that clearly shows progress toward category limits.

Cons

  • Requires manual activation of rewards categories every quarter.
  • Users have no control over which categories are selected for the 5% multiplier.
  • Base cashback rate is low (typically 1%) outside of the specific quarterly categories.

Caveats

  • The 5% reward is typically capped at a specific spending limit per quarter (e.g., $1,500).
  • Some users mention a potential merger with Capital One as a factor that may impact future rewards utility.
  • There are different versions of the card; some offer 5% rotating categories while others offer fixed rates on gas and dining.

Best for

  • Students and young adults building credit.
  • Optimizers willing to track and activate quarterly categories for high rewards.
  • Frequent shoppers at Amazon, Walmart, or wholesale clubs during relevant quarters.

Avoid if

  • You prefer a 'set and forget' card with a flat rewards rate.
  • You find manual quarterly activation of rewards categories tedious.

This summary uses balanced time weighting with about a 6-month half-life. The evidence is older (median age 421 days), which may not reflect the most recent quarterly category shifts or updated sign-up bonuses.

Probably could do better with diversifying with some 5% rotators like Chase Freedom, Discover It.

The first two cards I got were Discover It (el clásico) and the Apple Card, which catches some flak but is honestly not bad (just took advantage of that 6-month no interest financing). Those two I still use somewhat often.

If the discover card merger allows me to use my cash back for venture miles then I’ll use it over the gold for groceries but until then I don’t really care

Are you utilizing the Discover grocery quarter. AFAIK they have one and if you’re not using it that might stretch your AMEX BCP out a little longer.
