CSP

The Chase Sapphire Preferred (CSP) is a highly-regarded travel card primarily valued for its access to Chase's transfer partners, particularly Hyatt and Southwest. Users frequently recommend it as a lower-cost alternative to the Sapphire Reserve (CSR), noting that it provides essential travel protections and primary car rental insurance for a more manageable annual fee. While it is a cornerstone of the 'Chase Trifecta,' sentiment is mixed regarding its earning categories; many users find the 'online grocery' multiplier restrictive and the 1x base earn rate on non-category spending to be lackluster compared to competitors.
Pros
- Access to valuable transfer partners like Hyatt and Southwest
- Strong travel insurance and primary car rental coverage
- Lower annual fee that can be offset with credits
- Pairs effectively with other Chase cards (CFU/CFF) to maximize points
- Generous sign-up bonuses (SUB) are frequently cited as a top feature
- 10% anniversary point bonus on total spend
Cons
- The 3x grocery multiplier is limited to 'online' purchases, which users find awkward
- Low 1x base earn rate on non-category 'regular' spending
- Some users feel the card's features are becoming 'mid' or outdated in the current market
- Annual fee may not be naturally recouped for users who don't utilize specific transfer partners
Caveats
- The 25% enhanced point redemption through the Chase portal is rumored by some users to be changing or ending
- The card's value is heavily dependent on utilizing transfer partners rather than direct portal redemptions
- Users often suggest downgrading from the CSR to the CSP to maintain partner access while using other cards for lounge perks
Best for
- Travelers who prioritize Hyatt hotel transfers
- Users building a 'Chase Trifecta' point-earning strategy
- Those seeking primary rental car insurance without a high-tier luxury card fee
Avoid if
- You want a high reward rate for in-store grocery shopping
- You prefer a simple, high-flat-rate card for all purchases
- You do not plan to use travel transfer partners

Personally, if it was me I’d downgrade the CSR to the CSP. You keep transfer partners and all with Chase, while still retaining lounge access with Amex.
CSP Low annual fee, great travel benefits, pairs with other cards very well (if you ever expand), and points are very easy to use once you get enough.
The way the current landscape is, I don't see a point in getting CSP or CSR.
The CSP is great when you have other cards in the Chase ecosystem. The Doordash credits cover the annual fee, so it’s easier to justify than the Venture especially with the anniversary bonus points.
The “online grocery” multiplier on the CSP is awkward to use
That’s what I have- CSP & Fidelity. Not the most exciting but gets the job done.
CSP and Fidelity makes for a nice combo. I don’t love the AF but it’s been nice for travel insurance and some useful perks like DoorDash and Lyft.
Additionally, CSP and Amex overlap in the categories of spend and I find myself spending more on Chase because of Hyatt alone, and it’s also the only reason I got the card. I am wondering if it’s worth going with Hilton loyalty and just downgrading/cancelling my CSP as I don’t really make back the AF naturally on this card.
The earning rates on the CSR outside of airfare, the CSP outside of online grocery and streaming, the category du jour on the CFF and 3x dining on...every card??? are dismal.
On that basis, keeping the CSP just to preserve UR transfers may be worth it, but not sure if there’s a use case to put any spending on it.
