Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards
Reddit take
AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote
The Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards (CCR) card is a staple in the credit card community, primarily valued for its flexible 3% categories that can be boosted up to 5.25% for users with Preferred Rewards status. It is frequently recommended for its exceptionally broad 'Online Shopping' and 'Travel' categories, and because it is a Visa, it is a popular choice for Costco shoppers. While sentiment is largely positive, users often highlight the $2,500 quarterly spending cap and foreign transaction fees as its main limitations.
Pros
- High cashback potential (up to 5.25%) for Bank of America Platinum Honors members.
- Very broad 'Online Shopping' category that captures a wide variety of digital transactions.
- Flexible category selection including Dining, Travel, Gas, and Home Improvement.
- Visa network allows for use at wholesale clubs like Costco.
- Possibility to hold multiple versions of the card to cover different categories.
Cons
- Strict $2,500 quarterly cap on combined bonus category spending.
- Includes foreign transaction fees, making it poor for international use.
- Base rewards (without BofA status) are considered average compared to competitors.
Caveats
- Maximum rewards are gated behind the Preferred Rewards program, requiring significant assets held at BofA or Merrill Lynch.
- Occasional reports of purchases failing to code correctly for the 'Online Shopping' bonus, requiring manual intervention with customer service.
- Some users find the quarterly cap too restrictive for high-spend categories.
Best for
- Bank of America Preferred Rewards members (Platinum Honors tier).
- Frequent online shoppers.
- Costco members looking for a high-earning Visa card.
- Users who want to 'stack' multiple cards for specific 5.25% categories.
Avoid if
- You spend significantly more than $2,500 per quarter in your chosen category.
- You frequently travel or make purchases outside of the United States.
- You do not intend to keep assets with Bank of America or Merrill Lynch.

Platinum Honors with BofA CCR on Travel. While I normally put my flights on my PRE for the protection, I do make use of the broad travel category on my CCR for the 5.25% back.
I already have another card that gets me 4.5% back for online shopping (BoA CCR).
I’d normally recommend trying to product change the USBAR to a USB Cash+ for 5% utilities and another category of choice that a BofA CCR can’t catch
Honestly, just get more BofA CCRs or PRE for simplicity. BofA has the broadest travel category of any card, nothing else will be able to beat it in cashback.
I would get BofA CCR, get 200$ signup bonus, 6% cashback online purchases including apple.com (upto 2.5k per quarter for first year)
look into the bofa ccr can have multiple version sams club willcount as grocery i use mine alot at costco
I would recommend looking at BofA CCR. It is normally 3% card that grows with your assets all the way to 5.25% but now, BofA has a promo and this card earns 6% as the base for the next 12 months.
I also have the BoA (with Plat honors) CCR and PR as well which serve as a nice Visa with a good earn rate (5.25% CB on dining for CCR 1, 5.25% on online shopping for CCR 2 and CCR 3, 2.625% catch all on the PR), which I’ve earned close to $1500 CB this year.
Parent context: BofA CCR with PH has 3.5% in store; set to online and buy cash cards yields 5.25%. Caps at $2.5K per quarter. Reply: Honestly, anything you can buy online through Costco is great for the CCR. I just bought a Switch2 from Costco online for delivery which was great. I actually got 8.25% because they have a +3% total boost to to the CCR for the first year.
The multipliers equal that of the Discover It + BofA CCR - both starter level cards
