AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

The American Express Green Card is often described as a 'secret powerhouse' or a 'sweet spot' card for its broad 3x earning categories on travel, transit, and dining. While it lacks the extensive 'coupon book' credits of higher-tier Amex cards, it is favored by users who want a simpler way to earn Membership Rewards (MR) points or a lower-cost option to keep their points active. However, its $150 annual fee is a point of contention, with many users comparing it unfavorably to no-annual-fee competitors that offer similar multipliers.

Pros

  • Broad 3x multipliers on travel, transit, and dining with no earning caps.
  • The CLEAR Plus credit (up to $199) can more than offset the $150 annual fee for active users of the service.
  • Flexible travel category allows for direct bookings with any hotel or airline, avoiding the need for travel portals.
  • Excellent for city dwellers due to 3x earnings on tolls, parking, trains, buses, and rideshares.
  • Serves as a cost-effective 'holding card' to keep MR points active when downgrading from Gold or Platinum.

Cons

  • The $150 annual fee is difficult to justify for those who do not value the CLEAR credit.
  • Faces strong competition from no-annual-fee cards like the Wells Fargo Autograph, which offer similar 3x categories.
  • Lacks the significant lifestyle perks or additional credits found on the Amex Gold or Platinum.

Caveats

  • The card's value proposition is heavily reliant on the user's valuation of the CLEAR credit.
  • Strategic applicants should be aware that moving through the Green, Gold, and Platinum sequence for sign-up bonuses may be subject to total point caps.

Best for

  • Frequent travelers who value CLEAR Plus membership.
  • Commuters and city residents with high spending on transit, parking, and tolls.
  • Amex ecosystem users looking for a simpler card without complex monthly credits.

Avoid if

  • You do not use CLEAR or already have it covered by another card.
  • You prefer no-annual-fee cards for your primary travel and dining spend.
  • You want a card with high-end luxury travel perks like lounge access.

This summary uses balanced time weighting with about a 6-month half-life. The evidence is older (median age ~566 days), and confidence is medium as fee structures or specific credit values for financial products can change over time.

If you take public transit regularly and need CLEAR, the Green card is great.

But then, I got the Chase Amazon Visa, Amex BCP, and Amex Green in very quick succession. Each of those I didn’t research enough and each represented a mistake

I can keep points with Amex by downshifting to the green for $150 instead of $750

You don't have these holes if you get a Wells Fargo Autograph (not Journey) or an AmEx Green.

My current search leads to: Amex Gold, Amex Green, Chase Saphire, C1 Savor.

It's actually a GOAT if you use it for the extremely broad Travel category, Restaurants, and Transit, all with zero caps.

The Green card is great for city dwellers. The broad transit / travel category hits a lot of marks. Everything from the train and bus fare to tolls, parking garages, hotels, car rentals, and the restaurant you eat at all bet you 3x.
