tbh I’d seriously consider going AM4 instead — something like a Ryzen 5 5600 + B550 + 3200/3600 RAM. you’ll save a decent chunk and can put that into a better GPU, which matters way more for the games he plays.

Do I have any reason at all to buy one of the few mATX X570 boards available on the market or should I just save ~50 bucks and go for a B550 (cheapest option with PCIE 4.0)?

There's a b550 mobo on Newegg or Amazon for $60 and used 16gb kit of 3000 or better ddr4 on eBay $50 used. $120 total and it'll pair well with the 5500
B550 is the right choice, just have to pay attention if it has the connectors that you want/need like a usb-c or wifi if you need/want it
Just getting a Ryzen 5600 with a B550 motherboard and even 16GB of DDR4 will get you a hefty performance bump and you can run basically everything (at lest on low settings. Modern games are really resource demanding).

if i was building an am4 for my friends sisters uncles second cousins dads brothers boyfriends aunts grandma on a budget, id probably go with a b550, 32g ddr4, 5600 cpu, a 1000w psu and put any gpu i wanted in it ..
