Reddit take

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

The 5080 GPU is generally viewed as a high-performance card capable of outperforming current consoles and handling 4K gaming, though it is met with mixed sentiment regarding its value proposition and technical requirements. While users report strong frame rates and good temperatures on some models, there are recurring concerns about its high power consumption and the 16GB VRAM capacity, which some fear will be surpassed by future 'Super' variants.

Pros

  • Significant performance uplift (reportedly +20% over cards like the 9070XT)
  • Capable of maintaining high frame rates at 4K resolution
  • Strong thermal performance reported on specific models like the Gigabyte Gaming OC
  • Excellent option for users looking to significantly outperform current-gen consoles

Cons

  • High power draw often necessitates a power supply (PSU) upgrade
  • 16GB VRAM is perceived as low for the price tier, leading to concerns about future-proofing
  • Reports of loud coil whine, particularly with the MSI Gaming Trio model
  • Potential for fan bearing noise issues on certain models like the Palit Gamingpro

Caveats

  • Physical size may cause fitment issues in popular mid-tower cases like the Meshify 3
  • High entry price, with some regions seeing costs near $2000 CAD
  • Users have expressed concern that a future 'Super' refresh with more VRAM may quickly devalue the base 5080

Best for

  • 4K gaming enthusiasts
  • High-end PC builds with 850W+ power supplies
  • Users prioritizing immediate raw performance over long-term VRAM value

Avoid if

  • You are on a strict budget or have a low-wattage power supply
  • You are concerned about 16GB VRAM being a bottleneck for future titles
  • You are sensitive to coil whine or fan noise

This summary uses balanced time weighting with about a 6-month half-life. The evidence comes from a narrow window in early 2026 with a median age of 195 days; because GPU hardware is a fast-changing category, this older data may not reflect current market pricing or driver stability.

10 positive (56%) · 2 mixed (11%) · 6 negative (33%)

Day 1 everything went great. Pc powered up, threw windows 11 on it to test everything, get drivers, etc. Downloaded and played a few games from the steam library to check frames and configs, everything looked great, all temps were great, no issues.

Yea, I was debating that as well, though in CAD $ a 5070ti is around $1300-$1400 while a 5080 is around $1950 and beyond, not factoring in upgrading PSU which would be needed from what I gathered for that card.

Not sure a 5080 is even doable with the existing power supply as I've heard they're quite hungry.

Earlier this week I returned my 5080 Gaming Trio and upgraded to a 5090 Gaming Trio, assuming it would be just as quiet. Unfortunately, I noticed coil whine right away, I could even hear it when using my mouse scroll wheel.

I love the Meshify 3 case but not sure if my MSI 5080 Gaming trio would fit.

I just built my new PC. And noticed my MSI 5080 Gaming Trio has very loud coil wine under any load. Is this something I should return the card and swap it? I just bought the card a couple days ago.

I had the 5080 gigabyte gaming oc... loved it. But unfortunately i realized the fact that it only had 16gb of vram i knew rhat the 5080 super would have 20-24 and based on how they price it I was worried that it might tank the 5080 value even further.
