Reddit take

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

TCL TVs are primarily recognized as high-value, budget-friendly options that offer impressive panel quality for their price point. However, user sentiment is frequently tempered by reports of inconsistent quality control, specifically regarding panel uniformity and software stability. While many users find them excellent for the cost, others highlight persistent issues with motion handling, gaming features, and long-term reliability.

Pros

  • Excellent price-to-performance ratio, particularly for large screen sizes (55"+)
  • Strong HDR highlight performance for a budget-tier product
  • Generally well-regarded as a top choice for buyers on a tight budget

Cons

  • Frequent reports of Dirty Screen Effect (DSE) and panel uniformity issues
  • Persistent glitches with Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) and motion handling during gaming
  • Weak internal software and processing that can lead to lag or freezing
  • Reports of hardware reliability issues, including backlight failures and automatic restarts
  • Audio lag reported across multiple units in some setups

Caveats

  • Internal software is often the weakest link; users frequently recommend using an external PC or streaming device for processing
  • Default 'Movie' and 'PC' modes are often set too warm by default
  • Recent reports indicate ads may be introduced to the interface via software updates after purchase
  • Build quality, specifically diffusers and frames, is noted to be flimsier than premium competitors

Best for

  • Budget-conscious buyers looking for the largest screen for their money
  • Users who plan to use an external streaming stick or gaming console to bypass internal software
  • General media consumption in environments where perfect panel uniformity is not critical

Avoid if

  • You are a competitive gamer who relies on stable VRR performance
  • You primarily watch sports and are sensitive to motion processing issues
  • You are sensitive to the 'Dirty Screen Effect' or panel banding

This summary uses balanced time weighting with about a 6-month half-life. The evidence is older, with a median source age of approximately 308 days, which may reduce its accuracy for the very latest hardware revisions.

TCL puts their TVs too warm by default on movie mode let alone PC mode where you don't want it especially warm.

Bought 2 TCL TVs for 2 different properties and they both have audio lag. All other TVs in the house are fine, just the TCL.

Parent context: It was bought as a gift so I would have to ask for it to be returned which is a little annoying, however it is for sure noticeable like I said especially in hdr it seems less bright on highlights than the other half ish of the screen. Reply: In all honesty hdr looked great on the monitor I will be just getting a straight swap it's just darker on one said for some reason. The tv itself was amazing and no complaints atall

I just got a brand new tcl tv for my birthday and when I have been watching shows I notice that one part of the screen is a little darker than the other it's a bit distracting especially highlights in hdr it's the right hand side of the screen if the picture does it justice.

It's just so frustrating seeing how fantastic TCL TVs are in reviews and being unable to buy them!

no idea how it is nowdays but around 2 years ago when I bought mine the software was always the lacking part of the tcl tvs. I love my tv but it shines best when the processing is done by my pc and not the tv with an app.

My TV is a cheap $300 TCL, I don't think you understand how bad it sounds. The sound coming out of it rear speaks sounds like it's coming out of a paper bag buried under the couch seats.
