Reddit take

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

The Samsung Q800D is widely regarded as a high-value, "near-flagship" soundbar that delivers clear dialogue and crisp bass. It is frequently recommended for users who want a premium audio experience without the clutter of rear speakers, though it maintains a clear upgrade path through optional wireless rear speaker kits.

Pros

  • Excellent price-to-performance ratio, particularly when purchased on sale or as a renewed unit.
  • Strong dialogue clarity and impactful bass performance.
  • Very high volume ceiling, with users reporting sufficient loudness at low percentage settings.
  • Flexible setup; performs well as a standalone bar and sub for space-constrained rooms.
  • Compatible with SWA-9500S rear speakers for a full 7.1.4 surround upgrade.

Cons

  • Standalone performance lacks the dramatic surround effects of systems with dedicated rears.
  • May require manual TV setting adjustments (like enabling audio passthrough) to prevent audio compression.

Caveats

  • To ensure the best audio quality, users must verify their TV is set to 'passthrough' mode to avoid the TV compressing audio to PLC before it reaches the bar.
  • While it can occasionally simulate height or side noises effectively, it is not a true substitute for a physical surround setup out of the box.

Best for

  • Living rooms where rear speakers are aesthetically or physically impractical.
  • Buyers looking for a high-end audio experience at a mid-range price point.
  • Users prioritizing clear speech and strong bass for movies and TV.

Avoid if

  • You want a flagship 11.1.4 surround experience immediately (the Q990D is the preferred step-up).
  • You are already committed to a different ecosystem like Sonos and plan to expand slowly over several years.

This summary uses balanced time weighting with about a 6-month half-life. The evidence is older, with a median age of approximately 437 days, which should be considered as newer models may have since entered the market.

Not a Samsung TV, but on my q800D I had to go into my TV settings and enable audio passthrough. Otherwise the TV was compressing the audio to PLC audio and then passing it to the soundbar.

I can't do a direct comparison between the two, but I will say I got a Q800D earlier this year and have been really happy with it! Audio quality's been good to my ears, and while I don't get a ton of dramatic surround effects from it, there have been a few times where it's surprised me by making me think a noise is coming from upstairs or outside, haha.
