AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

The Samsung HW-Q990B is highly regarded for its cinematic performance, specifically its powerful bass and immersive Dolby Atmos capabilities. While it remains a top-tier choice for home theater enthusiasts, users frequently report mixed experiences regarding wireless connectivity stability and the lack of modern gaming features like HDMI 2.1.

Pros

  • Exceptional room-shaking bass and subwoofer performance
  • Highly immersive Atmos effects, including convincing overhead and rear sound
  • Substantial volume headroom and presence for large rooms
  • Effective integration with Samsung TVs through Q-Symphony

Cons

  • Intermittent connectivity issues with rear speakers and subwoofers
  • Dialogue can become muddy or difficult to hear at lower volumes
  • Lacks HDMI 2.1 ports, which may limit high-end gaming setups
  • Occasional eARC handshake problems with non-Samsung TV brands

Caveats

  • Newer models like the Q990C and Q990D offer incremental improvements and newer HDMI standards
  • Optimal sound quality often requires manual calibration of individual channel levels
  • The system's high power can be overwhelming in small apartments or shared living spaces

Best for

  • Dedicated home cinema setups where immersion is the priority
  • Users who want a 'plug-and-play' surround system with physical rear speakers
  • Samsung TV owners looking for ecosystem synergy

Avoid if

  • You need HDMI 2.1 passthrough for 4K/120Hz gaming
  • You prefer a minimalist setup without separate rear speakers
  • You are sensitive to potential wireless interference or sync issues

I've been extremely happy with my Q990B, but it rumbles hard and I love it for that. Nothing like your whole kitchen at the other end of the room vibrating at midnight in an apartment building during an intense movie scene. Unironically, I love it.

My Q990B has been giving me some problems recently. I have a Hisense UST projector connected to the Q990B over eARC. Every once in a while (I will say once per day?), audio just stops working for streaming apps. I also find that dialogue can be muddy at lower volumes

Looking at a bravia 9 but currently rocking a q990b with a Samsung TV and to me, q-symphony definitely makes a difference.

As much as I enjoyed the cinematic experience with the Samsung, I think I want to streamline my setup with just a bar and sub combo. ... honestly with how often I experienced connectivity issues with the q990b, I want to explore other brands.

I have a Samsung Q990B soundbar and I’m trying to connect it via HDMI ARC to my LG G5 TV, but I can’t get any sound. ... What’s odd is that this exact soundbar worked perfectly with my previous LG B8 OLED via HDMI ARC

Today I noticed that one of my rear speakers was not emitting sound continuously. One day before I heard some static sound and today it started malfunctioning.
