AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

The Samsung HW-Q800F is a mid-range soundbar generally praised for its wide soundstage, impressive height virtualization, and clear audio separation. While it is frequently cited as a significant upgrade over built-in TV speakers, user opinion is sharply divided regarding its subwoofer performance; some appreciate its 'clean' and 'tight' bass, while others find the sealed cabinet design underwhelming for cinematic rumble.

Pros

  • Excellent soundstage openness and height effects even without rear speakers
  • Clear separation of audio elements like dialogue, rain, and background effects
  • High volume ceiling with minimal distortion at typical listening levels
  • Expandable system that supports adding wireless rear speakers (9500s) later
  • Strong price-to-performance ratio when purchased on sale or refurbished

Cons

  • Sealed subwoofer design lacks the deep 'rumble' or vibration found in ported alternatives
  • Bass can feel 'thin' or 'underwhelming' to those seeking heavy cinematic impact
  • Noticeable performance gap compared to higher-tier models like the Q930 or Q990 series

Caveats

  • The subwoofer is tuned for 'soft' and 'pure' bass rather than aggressive vibration, which may require boosting settings to +9 for some users
  • Comparison to competitors like JBL suggests lower total wattage (400W vs 780W) in some configurations

Best for

  • Small to medium-sized living spaces where physical rear speakers are impractical
  • Users looking for a 'brutal' upgrade over standard TV audio on a moderate budget
  • Listeners who prefer crisp treble and clear element separation over heavy bass

Avoid if

  • You demand room-shaking, floor-vibrating bass for action movies
  • You have the budget and space for a flagship 11.1.4 surround system

This summary uses balanced time weighting with about a 6-month half-life. The evidence is older, with a median source age of approximately 290 days, which may not reflect the most recent firmware updates or newer model iterations.

I also recently tried the Samsung Q800F and returned it shortly after because I was not impressed with the sound, at least not compared to the Sennheiser anyway.

I got the Q800F on Woot and managed to snag the rear speakers for $150 on eBay. I had an LG system before, but returned it when I saw the Q800F deal on Woot. Holy crap, the Samsung sounds so much better.

if you need a sub, the Q800F is normally right at the $500 mark.

I have the q800f and I have my blu ray player plugged into the soundbar. Imo DTS is worth and was the whole reason I upgraded my soundbar.

With that budget, I would also consider the Samsung Q800F [here](https://electronics.woot.com/offers/new-samsung-hw-q800f-5-1-2ch-q-series-soundystem?ref=mwj_sh_el_1_bs) coming in under your budget with the caveat of free shipping for Prime members (not sure what it would be otherwise). It's a 5.1.2 bar plus sub, so you get an extra channel as a bonus.

Never had issues with the updates OTA and I owned the S800D, the Q800F and now the Q930H, all of them updated from the SmartThings app.

Iwas able to pick up q800f from woot.com for $467. Zero issues.

You can upgrade the Q800F later with discrete speakers, but then you'll be paying a lot more than what you'd pay for the Q930F now while keeping the main soundbar which is weaker on the Q800.
