I estimate that my Kobo Clara BW & InkPad 4 will easily last 10 years
But I also can only compare my Inkpad 4 (Carta 1200) to the Kobo Clara, and my InkPad 4 has a flush glass front, which is therefore higly regarded, because it's one of the only Carta 1200 devices with a sunken screen.
And because my InkPad 4 shouldn't be that different from the Era, I can 100% recommend it.
the InkPad 4 has 1500mAh (which still will get you over a month), the 8'' Kobo Sage even only has 1200mAh (which is viewed negatively together with the power hungry 1.8 Ghz quad core cpu... which by the way the Inkpad X also has).
A non Android InkPad 4 would even be the better device at a similar price point (which btw. has speakers, so epub > TTS would be available - but OP didn't ask for speakers or TTS).
8'' PocketBook InkPad 4 or 8'' Kobo Sage are I would say your options if you want a non-Android black & white device.
