The Pocketbook Era is a 7-inch e-reader recognized for its premium build quality, physical page-turn buttons, and a flush-screen design. It is frequently cited as a strong alternative for users seeking an open ecosystem that supports a wide variety of file formats without a mandatory account. However, opinions are mixed regarding its ergonomics and display uniformity, with some users finding it heavy and noting unevenness in the frontlight.
Pros
- Premium-feeling physical page-turn buttons.
- Flush screen design similar to high-end competitors.
- Built-in speakers and native Text-to-Speech (TTS) functionality.
- Supports a wide range of file formats natively without requiring a forced account.
- Open ecosystem that allows for third-party software like KOReader.
Cons
- Heavier than many other 7-inch e-readers, which can affect one-handed ergonomics.
- Frontlight can appear uneven due to the side-mounted LED arrangement.
- Sluggish performance reported during highlighting and annotating tasks.
- The bezel is a fingerprint magnet and requires frequent cleaning.
- Screen contrast is reported to be slightly lower than some competing Carta 1200 devices.
Caveats
- The sleep mode can be overly sensitive to cover magnets, sometimes triggering when the cover is folded back.
- Cloud synchronization via the mobile app can be inconsistent and may require app restarts.
- Auto-rotate functionality can be finicky, leading some users to disable it to avoid accidental orientation changes.
- One user reported that using KOReader might potentially affect the internal hardware clock.
Best for
- Users who prefer physical buttons and a premium hardware feel.
- Readers who want built-in audio and Text-to-Speech without needing external adapters.
- Those looking for an e-reader with broad file compatibility and no account requirements.
Avoid if
- You are sensitive to device weight for long reading sessions.
- You require a perfectly uniform frontlight for reading in total darkness.
- You frequently highlight or take extensive notes and need a highly responsive interface.
This summary uses balanced time weighting with about a 6-month half-life. The evidence is older, with a median source age of approximately 395 days, which may not reflect recent firmware improvements for this device.

Pocketbook has an app that syncs with their ereaders, maybe look at the Era (b&w).
I'm trying to decide which Pocketbook is best. I'm on a budget, Era is £200, BL4 £100. Both financially doable, but I'm trying to figure out if the Era has £100 more features and if it'll be a better investment.
If you want full openness and compatibility at the same size or bigger, I’d look into pocketbook. The era version even has included speakers and text to speech.
7": PocketBook Era.
I'm really leaning towards the Era for my next e-reader too.
Maybe go with the PocketBook Era then. It's currently £188.88 on Amazon UK for the 16 GB model. It has a 7" screen, physical page turn buttons, and supports a ton of different formats natively.
and the b/w 7" PocketBook Era (slightly lower contrast than the Kobo Clara BW)
Btw., since the Libra 2 isn't produced anymore (and likely hard to find), there's also alternatively the same sized PocketBook Era.
7'' PocketBook Era, 8'' PocketBook InkPad 4 or 8'' Kobo Sage are I would say your options if you want a non-Android black & white device.
That aside, I do find the build quality of Era to be higher - especially the buttons, that truly do feel premium. ... A drawback that I occasionally face is the overly sensitive sleep mode, which sometimes reacts to the cover magnet even when the cover is open. ... Also, while I do enjoy the flush screen, the bezel is a fingerprint magnet, so I clean it more often than other ereaders I had.
