AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

The Noctua NH-D15 G2 is positioned as the premier air cooler for high-end CPUs, frequently cited for its superior performance-to-noise ratio. While it is widely regarded as the 'absolute best' air cooling option, it faces criticism for its high price point relative to budget-friendly dual-tower competitors. Users also highlight significant physical constraints regarding RAM clearance and total case height.

Pros

  • Top-tier air cooling performance for high-end CPUs like the 9800X3D
  • Excellent performance-to-noise ratio
  • Reliable alternative to All-In-One (AIO) liquid coolers
  • Quiet operation even when used for overkill cooling scenarios

Cons

  • High cost compared to budget dual-tower alternatives like Thermalright
  • Substantial RAM clearance issues with 140mm fans
  • Potential for a 'weird hum' in certain case configurations
  • Large physical footprint can lead to case compatibility issues

Caveats

  • Standard DDR5 RAM (34mm+) typically requires raising the front fan, which can push the total height beyond the 168mm specification
  • Requires 28mm tall RAM for the front fan to sit flush with the center fan
  • Total height with tall RAM (e.g., 44mm) can exceed 180mm, potentially clashing with many standard cases

Best for

  • High-end builds prioritizing air cooling over liquid cooling
  • Users seeking the lowest possible noise levels under load
  • Builders with low-profile RAM and wide cases

Avoid if

  • You are on a strict budget and want the best price-to-performance ratio
  • You are using tall RGB RAM in a case with limited cooler clearance
  • You prefer the aesthetics or space-saving nature of an AIO

This summary uses balanced time weighting with about a 6-month half-life. The evidence is based on 13 mentions from r/buildapc with a median age of 205 days, which is relatively old for fast-changing PC hardware.

noctua is kinda waste of money, just get dual tower by thermalright.

I still have a weird hum they make that they didn’t make in my last case.

Most people will either get the thermalright PA/PS for most cost-efficient or the Noctua NH-D15 G2 for the absolute best air cooler on the market.

The current best air cooler (in performance relative to noise) for the 9800x3d is the Noctua NH-D15 G2.

Your cooler is overkill for the cpu for gaming, and that’s a good thing if you want low noise.

The main issue with RAM clearance is the NH-D15 itself. It uses 140mm fans that sit directly over the RAM. In virtually every NH-D15 installation you end up having to install the front fan slightly high on the front of the cooler since you'd need to have 28mm tall RAM for it to sit flush with the center fan. DDR5 starts at 34mm tall, and G.Skill Trident Z5 Neo ***44***mm tall. The Meshify 3 can handle 173mm tall coolers, the XL 182mm, and the NH-D15 G2 is "168mm" tall, but that's just the height of the tower itself. 140mm tall fan + 44mm tall RAM is 184mm, so 11mm taller than what the case can handle in either variant.

For the cooling, i'm not sure if i shouldn't just go with something a 100€$ less like the Peerless Assassin 140.
