The MSI MAG B650 TOMAHAWK WIFI is frequently recommended as a high-value "sweet spot" motherboard for AM5 builds, praised for its robust thermal performance and VRMs capable of handling high-end CPUs like the Ryzen 9 9950X. While it is a popular choice for its balance of features and price, a notable number of users report stability frustrations, specifically regarding long memory training times and occasional failures to POST.
Pros
- Excellent thermal performance with cool-running MOSFETs even under heavy load
- Generous connectivity including 3x M.2 slots and 6x SATA ports
- Strong VRM design suitable for high-end Ryzen 7000 and 9000 series processors
- Good price-to-performance ratio, often cited as a top-tier B650 option
Cons
- Reports of inconsistent booting, including the "red and yellow lights of doom" (DRAM/CPU lights)
- Long memory training cycles that can lead to slow boot times
- Occasional random shutdowns or failure to post after a standard shutdown
Caveats
- Requires a BIOS update to support newer chips like the Ryzen 7 9800X3D
- Mixed user reports regarding PCIe 5.0 support; some users note it is limited to PCIe 4.0
- Stability issues may occasionally require a CMOS reset to resolve
Best for
- Mid-to-high end AM5 gaming builds (e.g., 7800X3D)
- Productivity users needing multiple M.2 storage slots and solid I/O
- Builders looking for a high-quality motherboard without the premium price of X870/X670 boards
Avoid if
- You prioritize the fastest possible boot times
- You want to avoid potential BIOS-related troubleshooting or memory training delays

My mobo is a MSI b650 tomahawk.
I'm at my wits end. Started having issues with my 7800x3d build a few weeks ago randomly. It will randomly shut down, or if I shut it down, then it will boot maybe 1/100th of the time. It just sits there with the DRAM and CPU lights lit up like its memory training, I've left it overnight and nothing. I can't even get into the bios, it won't post at all but everything spins up. My mobo is a MSI b650 tomahawk.

Mobo I love Gigabyte B850M Gaming X WIFI6E at 170 or the the MSI MAG B650 Tomahawk WIFI. Those give you **PCI5 and PCI 4** lanes.
Your MSI B650 Tomahawk does support the Ryzen 9800X3D (as long as its BIOS is updated to revision 7D75v1L or later)
Other than your motherboard which is a bit under-specification compared to the rest of the build, this looks great.
