Manduka PRO
Reddit take
AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote
The Manduka PRO is widely regarded as a 'buy it for life' yoga mat, with users frequently reporting 10 to 15 years of regular use while maintaining its condition. However, it is highly polarizing due to its surface texture; while many praise its support and long-term feel, a significant number of users find it dangerously slippery, especially before a lengthy break-in period or when exposed to sweat.
Pros
- Exceptional durability with many users reporting over a decade of use.
- Provides firm, high-quality support suitable for various yoga styles and heavier bodies.
- Latex-free construction.
- Easy to clean and maintains its aesthetic appearance over years of practice.
Cons
- Notorious for being extremely slippery when new.
- Requires a difficult and sometimes unsuccessful break-in period.
- Often necessitates the additional purchase of yoga towels for adequate grip.
- Heavy and less portable than lighter alternatives.
Caveats
- Grip performance is inconsistent; while some find it perfect after breaking it in, others report it remains slippery even after years of use.
- The 'break-in' process is a frequent source of frustration for new owners.
Best for
- Practitioners looking for a long-term investment mat.
- Users who already use or prefer practicing with a yoga towel.
- Those who prioritize joint support and cushioning over immediate out-of-the-box grip.
Avoid if
- You have a high-sweat practice and refuse to use a towel.
- You want a mat with maximum 'sticky' grip immediately upon purchase.
- You lack the patience for a multi-month break-in period.

I like my Manduka pro and yogitoes towel.
Superb mat: Manduka Pro.
Parent context: Please get her a Manduka Pro! And at least two yoga towels to go with it. Reply: I would, but I think she would actually get so frustrated breaking it in that she wouldn’t use it.
Please get her a Manduka Pro!
I’d still recommend a Manduka PRO or PRO Extra Long for your height. It’s durable, very supportive for heavier bodies, and has great grip once broken in, making it a solid choice for regular Vinyasa and Gravity yoga.
I saw that a Manduka (spelling?) pro was a good brand in the 2018 megathread and wanted to confirm if that was still the case.
Agree, mid range mats are perfectly fine, but I thoroughly enjoy the feel of my Manduka Pro. Have been practicing on it 3-5 times a week for almost 3 years, I expect it to last for years and years to come
Thing is, a great mat like a Manduka Pro is going to feel awesome every time you use it.
My first Manduka Pro lasted 14 years until I decided I wanted a bigger one. I got the extra long Manduka Pro and it's been perfect from the day I received it - no breaking in needed.
I have a 15-year-old Manduka Pro that is well "broken in." It manages minimal amounts of sweat just fine. ... I still prefer it to everything else and plan to use it until I die.
