Reddit take

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

The Tesla Cybertruck is a highly polarizing electric vehicle that Reddit users largely characterize as a 'vanity project' marked by missed promises. While it is recognized for technical milestones like steer-by-wire and an 800V battery architecture, the consensus is heavily negative due to significant price hikes, build quality issues, and a design that many find impractical or 'ugly.'

Pros

  • Technological innovations including 48v architecture, steer-by-wire, and rear-wheel steering.
  • Effective 800V battery system that allows for optimized charging via series/parallel switching.
  • Functional as a tool hauler in specific utility or fleet contexts.
  • Unique, high-visibility design that stands out significantly from traditional trucks.

Cons

  • Final pricing is nearly double the originally promised $40,000 entry point.
  • Build quality concerns including 'janky' panel gaps, peeling trim, and rivets on the throttle fascia.
  • Real-world range and charging performance do not meet the original marketing hype.
  • Rapid depreciation and a 'collapse' in used-market value compared to high initial costs.
  • Polarizing aesthetics described as 'gawdy,' 'ugly,' and 'comically large'.

Caveats

  • Significant discrepancy between the 2019 reveal specifications and the actual production vehicle.
  • Reported concerns regarding high insurance costs and the risk of vandalism.
  • FSD (Full Self-Driving) performance on the truck is noted to lag behind the Model Y.

Best for

  • Early adopters who value experimental automotive technology over traditional utility.
  • Users who want a 'technological tour de force' and do not mind the social attention.
  • Fleet environments where the truck's specific hauling capabilities are useful.

Avoid if

  • You are looking for a truck that holds its resale value well.
  • You require the specific range and price points originally promised during the reveal.
  • You prefer a traditional pickup aesthetic or are sensitive to build quality inconsistencies.

This summary uses balanced time weighting with about a 6-month half-life. The evidence is older (median age ~423 days), which may not reflect the most recent production changes or software updates for this fast-changing product.

The Cybertruck is twice the price it was supposed to be and it is years late to market. All of those $100 deposits were predicated on a $40,000 truck which does not exist and probably never will.

The whole thing is a vanity project / Ketamine-induced fever dream anyway.

The best way to implement an 800V battery system is to make it two 400V batteries--connect them in parallel when charging from a 400V charger, so it can charge at the maximum speed of the charger, and connect them in series when charging from an 800V charger and when running the car. The Cybertruck and the latest Porsche Macon do this.

Parent context: I mean as much as I hate the cyber truck it actually works relatively well as just a tool hauler which is mostly what space X is using them for Reply: You’re right, the Cybertruck is perfect at hauling tools.

There will be books written about how disastrous the Cybertruck is. Literally a multi trillion dollar mistake that has completely ruined the electric truck market to the point that the U.S. simply will never be ahead in EV’s again.
