Reddit take

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

Fedora Workstation is highly regarded by users for providing a clean, "vanilla" GNOME experience that is often compared to macOS in terms of design and workflow. It is frequently praised for striking an ideal balance between system stability and access to the latest software packages, with several users noting that it performs better than Windows on the same hardware.

Pros

  • Excellent balance of system stability and up-to-date software packages.
  • Provides a stock GNOME experience that is clean and aesthetically similar to macOS.
  • Strong hardware compatibility, including support for fingerprint readers and older MacBook hardware.
  • Reliable major version upgrade process that users report rarely breaks the system.
  • Good gaming support through Flatpak and Proton-GE.

Cons

  • Does not include non-free drivers or media codecs by default, which can be a hurdle for new users.

Caveats

  • The GNOME desktop environment is noted to be less customizable than alternatives like KDE.
  • Initial setup may require manual installation of proprietary software and codecs for full functionality.

Best for

  • Users seeking a macOS-like design and workflow on Linux.
  • Developers and enthusiasts who want modern packages without the instability of a rolling-release distro.
  • Users who prefer a 'vanilla' or stock desktop environment experience.

Avoid if

  • You want a highly customizable desktop environment out of the box.
  • You are a beginner who is uncomfortable using the terminal to install essential media codecs or proprietary drivers.

This summary uses balanced time weighting with about a 6-month half-life. The evidence is older, with a median source age of approximately 385 days, which may affect relevance for a fast-changing operating system.

I would think that Fedora Workstation with Vanilla Gnome fits into that category.

Gnome isn't as customizable as KDE but Fedora Workstation and the atomic version Silverblue is fantastic.

I went through all 3 of the distros you mentioned and some more (Arch, Garuda, Debian, Mint, Ubuntu). And ended up with Fedora Workstation. Good balance of stability and latest packages. Even did Fedora 42 to 43 major upgrade (through terminal) on Day 1, and nothing broke.

The problem with the base fedora workstation is that it doesn't have non_free drivers such as video codecs and stuff, for a newbie that just booted a new OS that can be a bit off putting.

Get Fedora Workstation. Gnome will be the closest you'll get to a Mac experiences, design wise.
