Pros
- You don't need a crock pot to slow cook. It makes it a bit more convenient and if you like yours that's great! I understand why.
- It is a good way to make a lot of caramelized onions with little attention needed by you.
- Something like a crock pot is quick and easy but takes a long time to cook. Chuck all the ingredients into it in the morning, dinner's ready when you come home from work 8hrs later. Very little of your time invested.
- Worth it yo have a small crock pot on hand. I put my soup on warm setting and when I get home its perfect.
- Get a small crock pot.
Cons
- Crockpot onions come out really watery.
- Parent context: I used to make it in the crock pot, but it made the pork TOO soft/ lost texture and people wouldn't eat it. Oven works for me, but if love to hear others' recipes. Reply: Next time you make it, consider using the instant...
- I didn't think the crock pot onions had the same depth of flavor as the stove top method.
- I've never had luck doing it in the crockpot, too much water is released with no where to go and it just ends up boiling even if I leave the lid off.

I used a crock pot but with the modern instapots that's the way I'd go.
A crock pot might be a really good get here as well. Especially for a kid that doesn't like bread. You could cook up a few days worth of stew, a whole chicken and some vegies.. then you are cooking 2 or 3 times a week so you are a bit less likely to draw attention.
A crock pot is very handy for making soups and chilis. Those are pretty easy for beginners.
Parent context: I used to make it in the crock pot, but it made the pork TOO soft/ lost texture and people wouldn't eat it. Oven works for me, but if love to hear others' recipes. Reply: Next time you make it, consider using the instant pot but shred, lay out on a baking sheet and broil in the oven on high for 5-10 minutes after it’s done in the instant pot. Make sure to put the oven rack at the top. Incredible.
