Instant Pot

The Instant Pot is highly regarded as a versatile kitchen workhorse, particularly valued for its 'set and forget' convenience and its ability to significantly speed up the cooking of staples like dried beans and stocks. While it is a favorite for meal prepping and cooking from frozen, some users find it produces mushy textures for certain dishes and argue that its specialized functions (like slow cooking or rice cooking) are inferior to dedicated appliances.
Pros
- Excellent for cooking dried beans quickly without the need for pre-soaking
- Efficiently produces high-quality stocks and bone broths
- Provides 'set and forget' convenience for grains and rice without risk of boil-overs
- Capable of pressure cooking meats directly from a frozen state
- Reduces active kitchen time by eliminating the need for constant stirring or monitoring
Cons
- Large physical footprint can be a burden for those with limited counter space
- Sealed lid prevents liquid reduction, which can lead to less concentrated flavors
- Slow cooker mode is frequently criticized for running hotter than traditional crockpots
- Potential for mushy food consistency if timing is not precisely managed
- The air gap between the inner pot and the outer housing can be difficult to clean if spills occur
Caveats
- Total cooking time is often longer than advertised once pressure build-up and release times are factored in
- The slow cooker function may require the purchase of a separate glass lid to perform effectively
- While it functions as a rice cooker, enthusiasts often still prefer dedicated high-end brands like Zojirushi
Best for
- Meal prepping staples such as beans, grains, and shredded meats
- Users who want to make homemade stocks with minimal effort
- Busy cooks who frequently forget to defrost meat before dinner
Avoid if
- You primarily intend to use it as a replacement for a high-quality slow cooker
- You have very limited kitchen storage or counter space
- You are highly sensitive to food textures that can become overly soft
This summary uses balanced time weighting with about a 6-month half-life. The evidence is older, with a median age of 313 days, which is generally acceptable for a stable hardware product but may not reflect the newest model iterations.

Personally, I don't need pressure cooking, because I already have an Instant Pot, and while I don't know the length of cooking time (the instant pot cooks everything pretty quickly, I don't know if that is how a pressure/induction rice cooker works.
Loved the rice in the Instant Pot, but I love the Zojirushi far more.
Instant Pot can go rot. I use it for stock and making congee but that’s about it. Everything you make in it comes out with mushy consistency and it’s so big that I don’t want to leave it on the counter.
Then, I always make stock with the bones -- toss it in the Instant Pot with some veggies (and water), press the "soup" button, and done!
I make rice in my instant pot and it comes out great.. I’m surprised it’s getting all this hate lol I love mine
We use our instant pot probably 4x per week, but use it pretty much exclusively for brown rice, whole grains, and beans. I never make a meal in it. Once you factor in the pressure times you're still taking 45 min to cook grains, but there is no worry of burning or boil overs.
Second method was to brown the meat cubes in an Instant Pot and then pressure cook in broth on High pressure for 35 minutes. Then finish the stew. This method was better but the meat still was dry.
The stainless steel or ceramic coated pressure cooker pot does not retain a lot of heat. The crock pot holds heat well, which affects the cooking. The lid is also different. The pressure cooker lid is sealed, while the crock pot is vented. The pressure cooker retains liquid well, but doesn't reduce it as much. That's good when you want to retain all the flavors in the pot, but not so good if you want them to get more concentrated. We have a slow cooker glass lid for the instant pot, which can help. But for serving, the instant pot's air gap between the outside and the inner pot is a place for messy spills.
If you have a instant pot this makes it just a few hours and you don't have to babysit a pot
You can make Mexican style rice in the pan, beans in the instant pot. Tonight I made split pea soup in my instant pot.
