Reddit take

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

Melatonin is a polarizing sleep aid that Reddit users frequently discuss for its ability to regulate sleep cycles, though sentiment is slightly negative due to side effects and inconsistent efficacy. While it is highly regarded for resetting circadian rhythms and assisting neurodivergent individuals with sleep onset, many users report next-day grogginess, middle-of-the-night wakefulness, and concerns over dosage accuracy in commercial products.

Pros

  • Effective for resetting circadian rhythms and fixing sleep timing
  • Low doses (0.5mg to 3mg) are often cited as sufficient and effective
  • Reported benefits for neurodivergent children (ADHD/Autism) with production deficiencies
  • Helps some users fall asleep faster and calm racing thoughts

Cons

  • Frequent reports of next-day grogginess or a 'hangover' feeling
  • Often fails to help users stay asleep, leading to middle-of-the-night wakefulness
  • Significant concerns regarding dosage accuracy in non-USP certified supplements
  • Potential for mood disturbances, including reports of severe depression in some users
  • Risk of the body downregulating natural production with regular use

Caveats

  • Timing of the dose is often more critical than the amount taken
  • Gummy versions have been found to vary wildly from their labeled dosage
  • Short-lived hypnotic effect means it may wear off if the user stays awake too long after dosing

Best for

  • Resetting sleep schedules after travel or routine disruptions
  • Individuals with documented melatonin production deficiencies
  • Establishing a consistent sleep-onset routine

Avoid if

  • You struggle with staying asleep rather than falling asleep
  • You are sensitive to next-day grogginess or morning brain fog
  • You have a history of mood disorders or depression

In the evening, I use 5-HTP (200 mg) with KSM-66 Ashwagandha (600 mg) and Melatonin (5 mg) and these put me to sleep like a baby.

And also tried most sleep compounds like melatonin, tylenol PM, Trazadone, Ativan, Ambien. These remedies either didn't work, left me hungover, or only worked for a short amount of time.

melatonin is the obvious starting point but timing matters way more than people realize.

Melatonin (low dose 0.5-3mg) about 1-2 hours before bedtime helps sleep timing

Very low dose melatonin taken a couple hours before bed with poria mushroom, and nobiletin at morning.

Unfortunately melatonin made sleep worse for me. It was the first supplement I tried.

I didn’t just fall asleep faster, the biggest change was that when I woke up in the middle of the night, I could actually fall back asleep instead of staring at the ceiling for an hour. It wasn’t a knockout effect, but my thoughts were way calmer and the sleep felt deeper.

Low-dose melatonin (0.5-1mg) if circadian rhythm needs help

Melatonin is very helpful for getting to sleep and regulating the sleep cycle but from my experience it doesn't help with staying asleep because it's very short-lived as a hypnotic, you can feel it wear off if you stay up too long after dosing.
