Reddit take

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

The Cooler Master Hyper 212 Black Edition is generally viewed as a legacy CPU cooler that has been surpassed by modern competitors. While it was once a gold standard, current sentiment on Reddit is largely negative regarding its value, with many users describing it as an outdated design that is overpriced for its performance level compared to newer budget alternatives.

Pros

  • Compact single-tower design that fits in most standard cases
  • Aesthetic 'Black Edition' finish is preferred by some builders
  • Adequate for low-end or entry-level CPUs with low power draw

Cons

  • Poor price-to-performance ratio compared to modern dual-tower coolers
  • Insufficient cooling capacity for high-TDP processors like the Intel i7-14700F or i5-14600KF
  • Outdated design that may lead to thermal throttling under heavy loads
  • Strong competition from brands like Thermalright offering better performance for less money

Caveats

  • The cooler is often included in build lists out of habit or brand recognition rather than current performance benchmarks.
  • Some users report the design does not work as effectively with the AM5 platform compared to newer alternatives.

Best for

  • Low-end budget builds
  • Users who prioritize the specific 'Black Edition' look over maximum thermal efficiency
  • Replacing a stock cooler on a low-power CPU

Avoid if

  • You are using a mid-to-high-end CPU (e.g., Intel i7/i9 or Ryzen 7/9)
  • You want the best cooling performance available for approximately $25-$30
  • You are planning to overclock your processor

This summary uses balanced time weighting with about a 6-month half-life. The evidence is older (median age ~196 days), and because PC hardware value fluctuates rapidly, the relevance of specific price comparisons may have shifted since these discussions occurred.

Cpu cooler is overpriced. Plenty of cheaper choices, even an amd cooler can be had for $9.

Looking at building a PC, this is the parts list I'm sitting at, $1700 pre-tax from Microcenter. Is there anything obvious that I'm missing/overlooking?

the specific 212 he mentioned is 26, and while it is bad for the price there aren't way better coolers for 13, more like same for 17, bit better for 20/22, and dual towers start at 27, well, 24 for minidualtowers.

The hyper 213 is also a bit of an outdated design and doesn't work well with am5, so i suggest a thermalright dual tower cooler (single tower with 6 heatpipes like the burst assassin is fine as well).

CPU cooler is no where near enough for a 14700F

Not convinced you need to spend on an air cooler, but 25$ doesn’t exactly make or break your budget.

Don't get the 212 and get a phantom spirit instead
