AMD B650
Reddit take
AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote
The AMD B650 chipset is widely considered the "sweet spot" for the AM5 platform, offering a strong balance of price and performance. It is frequently recommended for gaming builds ranging from mid-range to high-end, as it provides sufficient power delivery for top-tier gaming CPUs like the Ryzen 7 7800X3D. While it lacks the latest connectivity features found on newer chipsets, such as USB4 and Wi-Fi 7, it remains the go-to choice for users who want a reliable, cost-effective foundation without overspending on features they won't use.
Pros
- Excellent price-to-performance ratio for AM5 builds
- Capable of supporting high-end gaming CPUs like the 7800X3D and 9800X3D without performance loss
- Frequently available in high-value retail bundles
- Reliable performance for standard gaming and daily productivity
Cons
- Some high-end B650 models are priced too closely to newer X870 boards, diminishing their value
- mATX versions may have limited I/O and RAM expansion slots compared to full ATX boards
- May require a BIOS update to support newer Ryzen 9000 series processors
Caveats
- Does not natively support newer standards like Wi-Fi 7 or USB4
- Integrated graphics performance on some boards may be limited by HDMI versions; DP 1.4 is preferred for high refresh rates
- Some users report diagnostic lights (e.g., orange light) indicating sensitivity to specific RAM configurations
Best for
- 1440p gaming builds focused on value
- Builders looking for a long-term AM5 platform foundation without premium features
- Users pairing with Ryzen 5 or Ryzen 7 processors
Avoid if
- You specifically require USB4 or Wi-Fi 7 connectivity
- You are performing heavy professional workloads, such as LLM training, that may benefit from X870 features
- The specific B650 board is priced similarly to a newer B850 or X870 alternative

For the rest, you don’t need to overthink it too much — just grab a decent B650 board, a good 750W gold PSU, and a solid air cooler and you’re set.
Get a Ryzen 7 7800X3D, RTX 4070, B650 board, 32GB DDR5, 1-2TB NVMe, 750W PSU, and a good case with airflow. It is good enough for 1440p and will last a long time.
I'm using a cheap b650m gaming plus wifi with a 7800x3d and 7800xt, I don't think you're gunna notice any difference, go with the 650 if you think it looks nicer
Everything looks awesome but for the price you are looking to pay for the motherboard there are x870 boards that would be in the same price range. Any specific reason for going for a b650?
From what I understand, as long as the B650 board has DP 1.4, the 8700G iGPU can push the full refresh rate of the monitor without issues, and HDMI is the one that can be more limited depending on version and OS.
I looked up on internet and found out that 840 is in the same class with a620m and people are recommending b650 instead.
I would probably rather get a b850 or b650 board for cheaper but the bundles they sell are only for the x870e boards, so I really mainly just care about choosing something that's reliable at this point.
Generally, the B650 motherboard is the best price to performance
B650 Motherboard
You have plenty of options for motherboard just make sure it supports AM5 DDR5 (your CPU only supports DDR5 ram), and it would be nice to include wifi/bluetooth so you don't have to separately buy a network adapter, something like B650 or B850.
