Zoom F3
Reddit take
AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote
The Zoom F3 is highly regarded as a compact and reliable field recorder, specifically praised for its 32-bit float recording and clean preamps. It is frequently recommended for solo operators and simple dialogue capture where preventing audio clipping is a priority. However, its utility is strictly limited by its two-input design and the lack of native, professional timecode support.
Pros
- 32-bit float recording prevents audio peaking and allows for flexible post-production levels.
- Exceptionally clean preamps compared to lower-end models like the Zoom F1.
- Very compact form factor with built-in belt loops for high portability.
- Reliable phantom power for professional XLR microphones.
- Dual ADC converters provide high-quality signal processing.
Cons
- Limited to only two XLR inputs, which may be insufficient for complex shoots.
- Lacks native timecode support; requires a Bluetooth adapter for timecode functionality.
- Bluetooth timecode implementation has been described by some users as poor or unreliable.
- Potential for sync drift when used alongside certain mobile camera setups.
Caveats
- Users may quickly outgrow the device if their needs expand beyond a simple boom and lavalier setup.
- Timecode jamming from professional devices (like Sound Devices) is not natively supported.
- The device is best used as a dedicated recorder or backup rather than a primary mixer for multi-mic setups.
Best for
- Solo dialogue capture
- Field recording with a stereo pair
- Portable documentary shooting
- Backup recording for critical audio
Avoid if
- You require more than two audio channels
- You need professional jam-sync timecode without external adapters
- You are managing a complex production sound environment that requires a full mixer

If you tend to mainly use that pair of mics you could also consider an F3.
The F3 has great preamps, and since it’s 32b float I don’t have to worry about adjusting the gain, just focus on mic placement.
I have a little Zoom F3 I would probably use for this if it were me doing it
I can’t afford the best and newest gear, but what I have doesn’t lack quality. 442/744T combo in bag/harness, a 416 on a Ktek Indie pole, four Sony UWP-D with Countryman B3’s, Oktava MK-012, AT 8022, Radius blimp/mount, Zoom F3 and many other odds and ends like that increase my versatility.
A zoom fx3 recorder and a comtek set with 1 transmitter and 2-3 receivers. Even the older crystal tuned ones still work. The zoom has an onboard headphone output and a line out that you can use to feed the comtek and then the operator, director and anyone else can hear live. Besides getting a better recording, you reduce trip hazards, free up the camera to move how they want, and frees the boom to be where it needs to be.
I got my Zoom F3 recorder used for $165 and it even came with the bluetooth dongle so I can use my phone to control it.
I already have a Zoom F3, and it’s great but I can only use it for certain situations. I also hate having to process 32 float files before being able to edit with them.
The Zoom F3 also got a firmware update to support jamming the timecode with a cable
I have a zoom f3 and will pair a shotgun for it.
I was pretty set on the F3, but I go to buy it, and literally every single supplier in my country(nz) is sold out or on backorder.
