Beyerdynamic DT 990

The Beyerdynamic DT 990 is a long-standing open-back headphone frequently recommended for gaming and critical listening due to its wide soundstage and comfort. However, it is highly polarizing within the audiophile community; while many appreciate its detail and longevity, others find its 'shrieky' treble peaks and 'boomy' mid-bass to be fatiguing or 'wonky.' A significant point of contention is its fixed, non-detachable cable, which users cite as a primary failure point that requires soldering skills to repair.
Pros
- Excellent for gaming due to wide soundstage and imaging.
- Highly comfortable for long sessions once the ear pads are broken in.
- Robust build quality that has remained largely unchanged since the 1980s.
- Responds well to EQ to smooth out its polarizing sound signature.
- Effective for critical listening and studio work where detail is prioritized.
Cons
- Fixed, non-detachable cable is a major durability concern and inconvenience.
- Aggressive, 'shrieky' treble can cause significant ear fatigue for sensitive listeners.
- Bass can be perceived as 'flabby' or 'boomy' rather than textured.
- High clamping force out of the box may require a lengthy break-in period (up to 2 months).
- Open-back design provides zero noise isolation and leaks sound significantly.
Caveats
- The 250-ohm version typically requires a dedicated amplifier to reach its full potential.
- The 'diffuse-field' tuning is analytical and may not suit those looking for a 'warm' or 'casual' sound.
- The joints where the earcups connect to the headband are known to become creaky over time.
Best for
- Competitive gaming where spatial awareness is critical.
- Studio professionals who need a durable, long-lasting reference tool.
- Users comfortable using EQ software to customize their audio profile.
Avoid if
- You are sensitive to high-frequency 'treble spikes' or suffer from ear fatigue.
- You require a detachable cable for easy replacement or travel.
- You intend to use them in public spaces or noisy environments.
- You do not have a dedicated amp for the higher impedance models.

No solution without messing up the sound. Put your hands over the outside of the cups, and you’ll hear how distorted it sounds. By closing the headphones, sound waves are bouncing back into your ears, and that messes up the design of open backs.
My DT 990 pro cable broke after 9 months of use. Poor design means u either have to learn to solder or throw them away. I threw mine away. Buyer beware.
Even after 2 years of using my pair of DT 990 Pros, I've never seen my hair getting past the gray foam below the earcup. The driver paper is completely clean and dust-free even after blasting mostly deep bass music.
there are frequent reports that this product line seems to not have the same high structural reliability as the standard series (DT770 Pro / DT990 Pro)
560S are solid all around including gaming. Most things are better than 990. 38X is a little better for gaming in *some* ways but not enough to justify the switch imo, and 560S is better for music.
In wired open type (preferred if you can do with sound leaking and no isolation), look into headphones such as... Hifiman Sundara or Focal Elex, Hadenys or Beyerdynamic DT990 Pro (higher 80ohm or 250ohm impedance version preferably) to name a few well balanced open back wired headphones.

The Q5K, e.g., can easily drive the 250 Ohm DT990 Pro, with a bit of EQ even great sounding.
tldr:/ 990 pro and 612/712 are good but I wouldn't take them over tygr 300 r which is a better tuned 990 pro you could say
Yes, it took 2 months to wear in the fresh ear pads of my DT 990 Pro. My jaw always started to hurt after just 20 minutes during that time. But now it's the most comfortable headphone I've ever worn.
