AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

Wizz Air is an ultra-low-cost carrier (ULCC) highly valued for its extremely low fares, which often significantly undercut the cost of trains and legacy airlines. However, user sentiment is generally negative due to reliability issues. Travelers frequently describe the airline as a "toss-up," citing a high risk of last-minute cancellations, overbooking, and difficult customer service. While it is a top choice for budget-constrained travelers like students, it is often criticized for strict baggage enforcement and the difficulty of obtaining re-routing or refunds during disruptions.

Pros

  • Extremely low ticket prices, often cheaper than rail travel
  • Extensive route network across Europe
  • Generally modern aircraft and good on-time performance when flights are not cancelled
  • Local help centers can sometimes be more effective than general customer service

Cons

  • High frequency of last-minute cancellations and delays
  • Unresponsive customer service during emergencies and long hold times
  • Strict baggage enforcement with expensive fees at the gate
  • Difficulty securing re-routing on alternative carriers after cancellations
  • Risk of being placed on standby despite having a confirmed reservation

Caveats

  • The airline may attempt to push for refunds instead of re-routing for cancellations made more than 14 days in advance
  • Gate agents are reportedly very strict about bag dimensions and may receive incentives for spotting oversized luggage
  • Once a flight change is accepted, the airline's responsibility for further free changes typically ends

Best for

  • Budget-conscious travelers and students
  • Travelers with flexible schedules who can handle delays
  • Short trips with minimal luggage

Avoid if

  • You have a tight schedule or time-sensitive commitments
  • You require reliable customer support during travel disruptions
  • You are traveling with multiple bags that may exceed strict size limits

Wizz is super cheap, definitely far cheaper than trying to take a dozen trains.

Wrong. You always get a choice between re-routing and a refund. The 2 weeks only matter when it comes to the statutory compensation but the right to re-routing still applies if the airline cancels more than 14 days in advance. If they can’t fulfil the contract on their own metal, they have to provide or reimburse alternative transportation at the earliest point even on a different carrier.

Yep, they completely suck. I try to avoid wherever possible. Same with Ryanair.

Please call the local wizzair help center, they are often much more helpful than a regular airline customer service. Tried with them twice, they helped with an issue regarding my bookings.

The agent basically cited this point to me, "If the airline does not offer you the choice between reimbursement and re-routing but decides unilaterally to reimburse your original ticket, you are entitled to an additional reimbursement of the price difference with the new ticket (under comparable transport conditions)." Since he wasn't able to offer me a viable alternative, he would refund the ticket (this is de-facto unilateral), and said I should file a claim for price difference of the airfare.

He was ready to give me a flight from Budapest to anywhere else, unfortunately not anywhere that would make sense for me. The option he gave me is to book a flight with the alternative carrier and then submit the claim with the claims department. So I asked for a refund and informed them that I …

I called an agent and they informed me the same thing I saw on the website, that since the route is cancelled they could only provide a refund, and they couldn't re-route me through other airlines as the cancellation had been made with more than 14 days of notice.

You have to pay to change. That's the end of the story. You accepted the initial change, so the airline's responsibility ended there and then. Anything you want to change from here is because you want to. You might be able to sweet-talk a CS agent into doing it for you if you're nice, but don't expect that from a low-cost carrier.

Agreed, op should get it or they will miss the check in period and add to one of the reviews about how Wizz air is a scam.

ULCC airlines like Ryanair, Wizzair are more risky than legacy network carriers.
