Reddit take

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

United Airlines is generally regarded as a reliable choice among major US carriers, particularly valued for its flexible booking and cancellation policies. While it is frequently compared favorably to other domestic competitors for its route network and digital tools, users report recurring frustrations with maintenance-related delays and a perceived lack of empathy from staff during service disruptions.

Pros

  • Highly flexible cancellation and flight change policies compared to other US airlines
  • Efficient app and website that handles group bookings for up to nine people smoothly
  • Strong direct flight availability from major hubs like Newark (EWR) and Houston (IAH)
  • Clearer justifications for flight attendants to intervene in cabin noise disturbances

Cons

  • Frequent reports of equipment and maintenance issues causing delays
  • Cramped seat pitch on long-haul flights when compared to major Asian carriers
  • Communication gaps where terminal staff are unaware of updates sent via the mobile app
  • Difficult terminal transfers at certain airports that require time-consuming train travel

Caveats

  • Upgrade offers for business class often result in being waitlisted rather than confirmed
  • Ground staff may show limited empathy or assistance during significant travel disruptions
  • The airline strictly adheres to departure times and will not hold flights for individual late passengers

Best for

  • Travelers who prioritize the ability to easily modify or cancel their itineraries
  • Large groups or families booking multiple tickets in a single transaction
  • Passengers flying direct routes from major United hubs

Avoid if

  • You are tall and prioritize legroom on ultra-long-haul international flights
  • You prefer the service standards and seat dimensions of top-tier international airlines

I just did a test booking on United to Tokyo and didn't have any issues booking for seven adults and didn't have any problems.

If you’re flying United, you could be in A or B terminal, which would suck to land in A and have to board in B. It makes it tougher because a train will be involved.

Unless you’re willing to take a longer travel day to bank points/status for Southwest you take the United flight without question.

We were primarily trying United, but also listed for Hawaiian and Air Canada. After two days trying, the loads were still not looking good for a few more days.

They won’t hold the flight for one person. The other 250 passengers are onboard and the crew probably doesn’t have a lot of duty time to play with.

Also check comparable on United out of Newark. They fly similar schedules to Europe on similar aircraft so if you are price sensitive it makes sense to check both.

The idea of sitting on a United plane for 16 hours just sounds dreadful.
