Google is currently viewed as a utility giant in transition, where its specialized tools for travel and storage remain highly valued while its core search product faces significant criticism. Users frequently report a decline in search quality due to SEO-optimized 'garbage,' sponsored content, and the shift toward AI-generated answers. While the ecosystem's convenience is undeniable, technical users express growing distrust regarding privacy and the lack of human support for non-enterprise clients.
Pros
- Highly effective travel tools, including Google Flights and the ITA Matrix for complex itineraries.
- Generous free cloud storage tiers that remain competitive for personal use.
- Extensive educational and DIY resources available through Search and YouTube.
- Strong professional prestige associated with its engineering standards and career history.
Cons
- Perceived degradation of search results, with users citing an overabundance of SEO spam and sponsored junk.
- Privacy concerns regarding data harvesting, specifically for training AI models like Gemini.
- Lack of accessible human customer support for smaller clients and individual users.
- Criticism of hardware longevity and 'grey market' availability in certain regions.
- High pricing for specialized developer services, such as AI video generation.
Caveats
- Users report a frustrating shift from Google being an 'answer finding' tool to an 'answer giving' tool that prioritizes its own AI summaries.
- Technical communities are skeptical of claims regarding 'on-device' processing for new features pushed without notice.
Best for
- Travelers seeking the best pricing engines for flights and hotels.
- Users looking for reliable, free-tier cloud storage and integrated productivity apps.
- Individuals performing DIY repairs or technical troubleshooting via YouTube.
Avoid if
- You are highly sensitive to data privacy and do not want your information used for AI training.
- You require high-touch customer service for your digital services.
- You prefer 'clean' search results without AI-generated summaries or heavy SEO influence.

google absolutely failing to find anything anymore.
Google and ITA Matrix. Keep trying different combinations of departure and arrival city.
I didn’t think I could do it either, but then I found google and with some inexpensive purchases I now have a basic switch on the modem and 2 lines (for redundancy) running thru my garage into a pipe that runs over a recessed roof to my bedrooms attic space and another switch/header that has one line for each bedroom that runs down the wall to an Ethernet jack in each room.
I typically ship around using Google then book directly.
Direct flight Atlanta to London. Train to Portsmouth. Taxi to cruise terminal. Everything can be done with Google, including a hotel somewhere if you need a day to adjust- recommend. No need for an agent.
