Air India
Reddit take
AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote
Air India is characterized by a significant divide between its competitive pricing and its operational reliability. While travelers appreciate its affordable direct long-haul routes and specific award travel 'sweet spots,' these pros are frequently offset by reports of poor customer service, frequent schedule changes, and unprofessional handling of premium bookings. Sentiment is generally negative, with many users citing a lack of accountability when flights are delayed or downgraded.
Pros
- Affordable direct long-haul flights, such as NYC to Mumbai, featuring lie-flat business class seats.
- High-value award redemption 'sweet spots' (e.g., Bangalore to Singapore for 12.5k miles).
- Reliable wheelchair assistance services for elderly or disabled passengers.
- Free cancellations are available on specific flight sectors.
- Lucrative credit card partnerships, including 10x point offers on Amex Platinum.
Cons
- Frequent and repetitive flight schedule changes or cancellations in the weeks leading up to departure.
- Unprofessional customer service and poor resolution of booking errors, even for business class passengers.
- Risk of involuntary cabin downgrades (e.g., Premium Economy to Economy) during significant delays.
- Inconsistent ground handling and boarding procedures.
- Lack of In-Flight Entertainment (IFE) on some older narrow-body aircraft.
Caveats
- Award seat availability is often difficult to confirm via phone support, with users reporting conflicting information.
- Upgrades are unpredictable and typically only occur during severe overbooking of lower cabins.
- Some promotional offers are viewed as non-transparent or 'half-baked' by the award travel community.
Best for
- Travelers seeking the most affordable direct routes for long-haul international travel.
- Award travelers looking to maximize specific high-value routes within the loyalty program.
- Passengers who require pre-arranged accessibility assistance.
Avoid if
- You have a strict schedule that cannot tolerate frequent flight timing adjustments.
- You prioritize high-quality customer service and reliable communication.
- You want to ensure you receive the specific cabin class you paid for without risk of downgrade.

Air india is 1.2 for buisness and to hnd
I booked direct Air India for Mid-may. It was affordable a few months ago, now I guess the prices must have spiked.
We had the same flight scheduled last November. Air India changed our flight 5 times within 4-6 weeks before we were scheduled to leave. After the 5th change we cancelled Air India and rescheduled with Lufthansa. I was not surprised at the horrible service with Air India as 90% of reviews about their service are negative. Will never book a flight with them again.
In India, the ground handling was done by Air India (Star Alliance crew). At the boarding gate, they announced “random checks.” I stayed back and observed for a bit, and honestly… it didn’t look random at all.
I’ve used air India in the past for my grandparents to fly to the US. When I called them they were able to wheelchair assistance to their profile.
I know lots of people who've flown in India without specifying a middle name and they've had zero issues.
In the "Given Name" field on their booking platform it states: "First Name and Middle Name, if any." The formatting is also explained [on their website.](https://www.airindia.com/in/en/passenger-name-format.html)
Possibly the worst airline in the world to be honest, consistent bad reviews about shocking treatment. They honestly don’t even care.
Chennai to Tokyo via Delhi on Air India is 70,000 miles plus 8000 INR. Assuming your cash fare of 70,000 for 2 Pax that's 2.25 INR per edge mile and saves you one layover.
