Vietnam Airlines
Reddit take
AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote
Vietnam Airlines is generally regarded as a reliable full-service carrier with a strong business class offering and generous baggage policies. While it is a popular choice for SkyTeam award redemptions, users frequently report significant friction with its customer support and loyalty program onboarding.
Pros
- Quality business class experience on long-haul aircraft like the A350, featuring good food and spacious seating.
- Generous standard baggage allowance, typically 23kg for economy tickets.
- Strategic flight paths, including the ability to fly over Russian airspace for certain routes.
- Good availability and value for award redemptions through SkyTeam partners like Flying Blue.
Cons
- Customer support is often described as unhelpful or difficult to reach for clear answers.
- The Lotus Miles loyalty program has a complicated and difficult onboarding process.
- Rigid policies regarding ticket modifications, especially for bookings made through partner airlines.
Caveats
- Booking through third-party partners (e.g., Virgin Atlantic) can make simple corrections like name changes extremely difficult or impossible.
- Economy award redemptions may offer poor value compared to cash prices; users suggest checking revenue tickets first.
Best for
- SkyTeam loyalty members looking for award redemptions.
- Travelers seeking a full-service experience over budget carriers in Southeast Asia.
- Long-haul business class travelers.
Avoid if
- You prefer a highly responsive and easy-to-navigate customer service department.
- You are booking through a third-party agency and anticipate needing flexible ticket changes.

If Thai Airways asks, I’ll simply show them my return ticket with Vietnam Airlines?

Vietnam airlines support is so awful they wont even give me a clear answer.
Hi, I just booked Vietnam airline via virgin Atlantic website, neither airlines can help me in adding a middle names on tickets, even though Vietnam airlines allow it if you purchase direct. they charge a small fee to correct the name. They won’t help because I booked through another airline.
If cost is not a major concern, then book with full-service carriers like Vietnam Airlines, Thai Airways, JAL, ANA.
I traveled with Vietnam Airlines. For normal ticket, your bag is always 23kg and they may tolerate up to under 24.
I am thinking of doing Vietnam airlines via virgin with a stopover at Hanoi (stay there for 2 nights)
Transfer to Virgin fir 30k virgin and 8k in taxes you get Vietnam Airlines business class one way
You can explore moving Amex points to Virgin and using the Vietnam Airlines partnership to book flights. It would cost about 30k per person return.
Krisflyer or Vietnam airlines would enntje best bet. Vietnam should cost around 40k points round trip .
