Reddit take

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

TSA is frequently criticized by travelers for extreme inconsistency in security procedures and unpredictable wait times. While the agency provides clear guidelines on prohibited items and fines, users report a high level of frustration with staff communication styles and technical glitches that can lead to significant travel delays.

Pros

  • Clear public documentation regarding prohibited items and potential fines for violations
  • Standardized procedures for disposing of prohibited items found at checkpoints

Cons

  • Significant inconsistency in security rules (e.g., shoe removal) between different airports
  • Unpredictable wait times that can exceed 1.5 hours even for PreCheck members
  • Staff communication is often described as aggressive or rude toward passengers
  • Risk of damage to checked luggage and internal packaging during manual inspections
  • Frequent technical glitches and name mismatch errors between airline tickets and TSA systems

Caveats

  • Security experiences and wait times are highly airport-specific and vary by time of day
  • Manual inspections of checked bags may result in damaged packaging even for legal items

Best for

  • Travelers who arrive at the airport with a significant time buffer
  • Passengers who carefully research specific airport wait times in advance

Avoid if

  • You expect a uniform security experience across all domestic airports
  • You have a very tight connection that cannot accommodate unpredictable security delays

The TSA website says they prohibit alcoholic beverages over 140 proof. You can be fined $450-2570.

TSA can and will go through your checked bag to confirm. They left me a nice little note when coming back from South Africa. Completely destroyed the box the bottle was in which was ridiculous because the whole thing was still sealed in my duty free bag 😭

The no consistency part is so nuts to me!

Shoes and stuff.. it really all depends. No consistency across airports. You'll just have to pay attention to what they're saying at security.

don't worry they yell at everyone, don't take it personally, every airport has different procedures and there's no consistency.

You’ll just need to research the wait time at TSA. It varies a lot from city to city and is a problem in some places but not others.

Again, another name mismatch, oh well. TSA for some reason did not accept his ticket after it was fixed. Told him to go back to the help desk. They reprint the ticket where the Delta rep said “I don’t know why TSA turned you away. So I wrote a code on there to let them know you can pass”

Flew into JFK yesterday from Rome and with global entry customs was instant but even with TSA precheck going back through security took about 1.5 hours. Pretty miserable but definitely airport specific and time/day specific.

Going to the US: the TSA is a new level of frustration. We ended up having to re-work plans to effectively spend hours at the airport as the wait/delays were so unpredictable.

Sometimes the check bag lines are long, and then the TSA lines are almost always long too.
