Spier & Mackay is a highly recommended brand within the Reddit menswear community, particularly for entry-level suits and high-quality essentials like Oxford Cloth Button Downs (OCBDs) and linen shirts. It is frequently praised for offering a superior price-to-quality ratio compared to traditional retailers, though its garments are known for a characteristically slim fit.
Pros
- Excellent value for the price point, especially for suits under $500
- High-quality fabric choices and solid workmanship for an entry-level brand
- Offers a variety of contemporary and classic cuts, including the popular 'Neo' cut and high-rise trousers
- Free returns on the first order to help new customers find their correct size
- Consistently rated better than modern Brooks Brothers at a similar price point
Cons
- Sizing leans very slim; even larger sizes can feel tight on some builds
- Online-only model makes initial sizing difficult without prior measurements
- Occasional reports of mixed reviews regarding consistency compared to slightly higher-priced competitors like SuitSupply
Caveats
- Users often recommend sizing up at least one full size from your 'true' size due to the slim cuts
- While generally reliable, some users suggest contacting customer service directly if an order is needed quickly
Best for
- Slim or slender builds
- Budget-conscious shoppers looking for their first high-quality suit
- Building a wardrobe of classic essentials like linen shirts and OCBDs
Avoid if
- You prefer a traditional, roomier fit and are unwilling to size up
- You require a brick-and-mortar fitting experience for every purchase

places like Spier and Mackay/SuitSupply have super mixed reviews
Spier & Mackay relaxed fit blazers look amazing and the price is great - unfortunately they usually do not offer size 38L for most items (only 40L+) and their warehouses are only located in US, meaning I would have to pay ~30% of the price for customs
I replaced all my suit supply suits with SM suits…measurably better quality and fit…
My initial distaste of S&M really boiled down more to fit, even though I initially attributed it to quality. ... If I could ever figure out how to get a good fit with spier and mackay, i'd do it again.
Let's not overstate the construction details of S&M. The shoulders are not that well made at all. The chest canvassing doesn't support a truly good roll on the 3-roll-2. The buttonholes are machined holes. Again, it's fine for the price point but these are more akin to counterfeit details rather than the real thing.
I certainly agree that for 1 suit, spier is kind of thin value. It's fine if you know what you're doing, know how to evaluate your measurements/fit/tailoring. You might save $200-$300 overall depending on the fabric type for a RTW suit.
They're fine. People make the same unfounded claims about the level of quality as people on this sub did about SuitSupply ten years ago. But they're fine and still mostly ok for the for money, though less so now after the tariff hikes.
The S&M suits/jackets I have I’d certainly say are on par at least with a Suit supply one. I also feel like Spier & Mackay has plenty of sales / end of season clearance events where if you know your size, you can get some really good deals.
I have several suits from S&M and am a huge fan - the red line/groomsman suits are the best bang for your buck, and the tier above that is just a little bit nicer in terms of fit and fabric.
Love Spier & Mackay, just adding a warning that they don’t do vanity sizing so be sure to check the measurements (which to their credit are accurate)
