AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote
CeraVe is a staple drugstore brand widely recognized for its focus on skin barrier support and fragrance-free formulations. While it is frequently recommended by dermatologists as a reliable and affordable base for skincare routines, user feedback is notably polarized. Many users find it gentle and effective, but a significant subset of reviewers report adverse reactions ranging from a stinging sensation on sensitive skin to the development of painful cystic acne.
Pros
- Strong emphasis on skin barrier support and maintenance.
- Fragrance-free formulations that are generally well-tolerated by many.
- Affordable and widely available drugstore option.
- Functions well as a basic 'base' moisturizer that can be layered with other treatments.
Cons
- Frequent reports of stinging or burning, especially for users with rosacea or a compromised skin barrier.
- Can trigger breakouts or cystic acne for certain skin types.
- Some users find the products leave their skin feeling 'suffocating,' 'tight,' or 'stripped.'
- Owned by L'Oreal, which is cited as a drawback for users who avoid brands that test on animals.
Caveats
- Users report a risk of receiving counterfeit products when purchasing from third-party sellers.
- Some long-term users have noted increased skin sensitivity following formulation changes in recent years.
- Recent sentiment includes some dissatisfaction with the brand's advertising and partnership choices.
Best for
- Building a basic, fragrance-free skincare routine on a budget.
- Users seeking dermatologist-recommended products for general barrier health.
- Layering under more active skincare treatments.
Avoid if
- You have highly reactive skin or rosacea, as stinging is a common complaint.
- You are prone to cystic acne, which some users report is exacerbated by these formulas.
- You prioritize brands that are strictly cruelty-free.

Cerave and Vanicream are good for almost everyone.
Get some fragrance free CeraVe or Cetaphil for your face.
As for brands, I always recommend cerave. You can't go wrong with it.
If it’s face specific, I like Cerave, it’s light and moisturizing.
And a really good moisturizer, immediately after, day and night. Cerave and La Roche Posay have OTC moisturizers people really like. I have been using the NIDA moisturizing cream and then lock it in with cerave moisturizing cream (I like thicker moisturizers).
Also tried other cleansers (Vanicream, Cerave) and they still stung - it’s really just the Aveeno Baby Daily Moisture https://www.aveeno.com/products/baby-wash-shampoo that didn’t
i cannot tell you to change creams, bacause cerave in theory seems ok, but it might be not ok for you though.
All my life I only washed my face with soap and then moisturizer (CeraVe). Began using sunscreen religiously since 22.
That said, I think I went a little too far down the Vaseline and Cerave path without fully understanding the context. Lot's of irritation from both.
I’d recommend using jojoba oil right out of the shower first to protect your skin and moisturize and then mix the urea lotion equally with CeraVe or Vanicream to dilute it and apply afterwards.
