Sony WH-1000XM4
Reddit take
AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote
The Sony WH-1000XM4 is widely considered a benchmark for active noise-canceling (ANC) headphones, frequently preferred by users over its successor, the XM5, for its folding design and perceived value. It is highly praised for its ability to silence engine noise during travel and its long-lasting battery life. While it remains a top recommendation for commuters and travelers, it faces criticism for long-term durability issues with its plastic hinges and a known hardware failure colloquially called the 'Screech of Death.'
Pros
- Exceptional active noise cancellation, particularly effective for air travel.
- Impressive battery life that can last through multiple long-haul flights on a single charge.
- Highly portable folding design that many users prefer over newer Sony models.
- Comfortable for extended wear, with many users reporting years of daily use.
Cons
- Physical durability concerns, specifically regarding the plastic hinges and pivots which can break within a year.
- Poor performance for gaming due to Bluetooth latency and significant audio quality drops when using the microphone.
- Firmware updates have been reported to negatively impact the user's custom EQ settings.
- Difficult to repair; the shells are glued and internal components are tightly packed.
Caveats
- The 'boomy' bass profile is largely due to foam inserts; removing them significantly alters the sound signature.
- Occasional reports of a high-pitched feedback loop (the 'Screech of Death') occurring after several years of use.
- While battery replacement is possible to extend the device's life, it requires technical proficiency.
Best for
- Frequent travelers and commuters needing top-tier noise isolation.
- Users looking for a high-quality alternative to the newer XM5 model.
- General productivity and office work where blocking ambient noise is a priority.
Avoid if
- You need a headset for low-latency gaming or high-quality voice calls on PC.
- You are a side-sleeper looking for headphones to wear in bed.
- You prioritize easy, tool-free repairability and battery replacement.

Ain't nobody recommending the ANC Sonys for gaming
Side note, Shout-out to the XM4 headphones, mine are almost 5 years old and besides replacing the cushions they still work quite well.
The XM4 is a superior headphone if you want to just look for a deal on that.
Because I currently have XM4 as my travel headphones so I want as good ANC as possible
I’ve been using my Focal Bathys as my main wired pc headphone for about 10 months now after my Sony XM4s failed at the plastic pivot after 5 years of daily use.
I love my XM4 on airplanes but that’s about it.
WH1000XM4. It has much better noise cancelling then the Momentum 4 and it’s much more comfortable.
Yes. The XM5s and the XM6s are worse than the XM4s.
If you want to buy Sony I would recommend the XM4 > XM5
I would get the XM4. You get top tier ANC and transparency at a significantly price than the XM6. It will also be better than the Momentum 4
