Reddit take

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

The Sonos Beam is a popular compact soundbar frequently recommended for apartment living and users already integrated into the Sonos ecosystem. While it offers a significant upgrade over standard TV speakers and features respectable bass for its size, Reddit users are notably divided on its audio fidelity. Many find the sound profile 'thin' or 'artificial' compared to competitors like JBL or Samsung, and the lack of Bluetooth and requirement for iOS-based Trueplay tuning are common points of friction.

Pros

  • Compact design fits well under wall-mounted TVs
  • Significant upgrade over integrated TV speakers
  • Good bass performance for a standalone bar without a dedicated subwoofer
  • Seamless integration with other Sonos speakers for surround sound
  • Ideal for apartments where high volume might disturb neighbors

Cons

  • Audio can sound 'thin' or 'harsh' during specific sounds like rain or applause
  • Lacks Bluetooth connectivity for direct music streaming
  • Physical height can block the IR port on some TV models
  • No easy way to toggle the system off for content like news where bass is unwanted
  • Requires an iOS device for Trueplay room calibration

Caveats

  • Trueplay tuning is essential for optimal sound but is restricted to Apple devices
  • Users frequently report better value or clarity from competitors like JBL and Samsung at similar price points
  • The lack of Bluetooth may be a dealbreaker for non-Apple users

Best for

  • Apartment or townhome residents
  • Users already owning Sonos speakers
  • Small to medium-sized living rooms
  • Those seeking a minimalist setup without a separate subwoofer

Avoid if

  • You require Bluetooth for music streaming
  • You do not have access to an iOS device for setup and tuning
  • You prioritize high-clarity dialogue and natural sound over ecosystem features
  • Your TV has a low-clearance IR sensor

I replaced a Sonos Beam with a 250€ JBl Bar 300 and it was incredibly better in every way.

We replaced a Sonos Beam and a Arc with the JBL bars and it’s night and day. We will never go back to Sonos and have warned our friends to avoid this brand.

a lot of people have recommended the samsung s60, it is a 3.0 bar and more sound customization options, might be clearer with the center channel. or sonos beam.

Some good options are, LG Eclair qp5, Lg Eclair se6s, Sonos Beam, Samsung HW-S60, Vizio all in one 2.1, Bose smart soundbar. Although it should be noted the Qp5 is the only one on the list with a dedicated sub, although the beam gen 2 gets close to its bass output.
