Pros
- Grab electronic bicycles/bicycles and ride along Shimanami Kaido until Uma Island
- Pick up bikes and forward luggage (ideally) by 9:00 and start cycle. Stop as needed, but main "must see" locations are all at or nearby to Kousanji Temple.
- Day 3 - Shimanami Kaido Pick up bikes and forward luggage (ideally) by 9:00 and start cycle. Stop as needed, but main "must see" locations are all at or nearby to Kousanji Temple.
- On our next trip to Japan we will probably ride the Shimanami Kaido again, it was that beautiful.
- I was there 2 months ago, my main stay was in Osaka, but took the Shinkansen down to onomichi then biked the shimanami kaido down to imabari.
Cons
- I’ve read the first part is the least scenic and quite industrial so you might want to consider doing Setoda to Imabari.
- I would be more worried about being in direct sun during the shimanami kaido for extended periods of time. I’m 6months pregnant now and the recent heatwave is killing me. Biking is no problem but the heat might be an issue.

Shimanami on an e-bike is fine for a non-avid rider if you leave by 9 like that.
Easily the highlight of the trip for me. Coastal route was gorgeous and roads a joy to cycle on.
3-day Shimanami Kaido e-bike ride (split across Onomichi → Setoda → Omishima → Imabari for a very relaxed pace)... cycling was always non-negotioable experience for that trip
