For example i lived with 5 roommates during my time of saving up so my rent was $300 a month. I worked 40-50hrs a week and even did more overtime lots of weeks, worked 2 jobs, and barely ate out. Yeah it sucked sometimes but it ended up being worth it when I could travel for months at a time.
It can EASILY be cheap especially if traveling southeast asian countries (ex: vietnam, thailand, indonesia) and hostels always exist too. You can literally find hostels in vietnam for like $4-8 a night.
Vietnam is top of my list to bring my kids! They need to be a bit older to handle the craziness of the large cities, but the country is incredible. There’s so much to see and do.
Motorcycle trip across Vietnam or in Hamachel Pradesh in India. The Indian trip is a bit more intense with mountain roads etc but both are incredible, inexpensive and easy to plan .

In Vietnam I was looking at homestays on the train, sometimes booking them only a couple hours in advance. I paid like $15 USD or so a night at homestays in Vietnam, so it was easy to not care about bumped up rates so much.. and they really didn't seem to be.
And no, for me Vietnam felt like a proper downgrade compared to Thailand.
And Vietnam is high on my "to visit list".
Also, Vietnam is super cool. I loved my time there. Not super expensive, very safe, and lots of fun things to do.
