Day 3 - Shimanami Kaido Pick up bikes and forward luggage (ideally) by 9:00 and start cycle. Stop as needed, but main "must see" locations are all at or nearby to Kousanji Temple.

On our next trip to Japan we will probably ride the Shimanami Kaido again, it was that beautiful.

AI summary — not a quote

The Grand Canyon is overwhelmingly regarded as a bucket-list destination that exceeds expectations, with many travelers noting that photos fail to capture its true scale and impact. While it is a staple of Southwest road trips, the consensus is that it requires dedicated time rather than a brief stopover to be fully appreciated.

Pros

  • Breathtaking scale that users claim 'pictures do not do justice'
  • Well-developed shuttle system makes it accessible even for those without a car
  • World-class hiking trails like South Kaibab to Cedar Ridge
  • Central location for broader Southwest loops including Zion, Bryce, and Sedona

Cons

  • Lack of immediate off-site amenities; affordable lodging often requires driving an hour or more
  • Can feel 'crammed' and exhausting if combined with too many other parks in a short window
  • Significant driving distances required to reach other regional highlights

45 mins at Grand Canyon is… something. 1 full day + two halves is just enough to get a taste of what the park has to offer, unless you just don’t give a shit about that kind of thing.

I’m not impressed by anything, went to the GC 3 years ago and was blown away. Pictures do not do it justice. Very special place

Seems very rushed and crammed. That's a LOT of driving on days 3 and 4, especially after visiting the Grand Canyon on day 3 and then driving 5 hours. I would personally skip Monument Valley and add a day to Sedona and give yourself some breathing room to enjoy the Grand Canyon.

Antelope is extremely cool and absolutely worth the trip, but not at the expense of Grand Canyon.
