Pros

  • I still do final drafts in Scrivener; most of the research is complete and I don't need the distraction of Obsidian to lure me into chasing new things :)
  • For fanfiction, consider dedicated writing tools like Scrivener or Obsidian.
  • Scrivener, to me, is the absolute best tool for writing longer works bar none. A novel can have literally thousands of files and you can keep them straight. It is certainly more “linear” and book-like. Scrivener is a very good writing en...
  • I am writing a novel in scrivener and want to keep the writing there, since it works very well for me.
  • Looking for a method/plugin to recreate this one specific layout feature of Scrivener: when you open a document/note, it has two additional spaces on the right sidebar for more notes (synopsis, scratchpad, etc). That's really the number...

Cons

  • I am former Scrivener user who appreciated its structure, but not the export/compiler quirks and (for me, YMMV) learning curve.
  • I just switched from scrivener to obsidian and was desperate for an option like this. I didn't find anything quite as seamless as what scrivener offered, but I've found two pretty good options.
  • However, now I wanted to ask if it was possible to edit the editor's layout to get something similar to Scrivener.
  • I find it a better writing tool than Scrivener that likes to lose it's lic on me from all their back end changes.
  • I'm thinking about switching from Scrivener to Obsidian for my fanfiction writing.

Scrivener, to me, is the absolute best tool for writing longer works bar none. A novel can have literally thousands of files and you can keep them straight. It is certainly more “linear” and book-like. Scrivener is a very good writing environment, ie, corkboard, outlining, scrivenings and full screen composition mode.

Looking for a method/plugin to recreate this one specific layout feature of Scrivener: when you open a document/note, it has two additional spaces on the right sidebar for more notes (synopsis, scratchpad, etc). That's really the number one thing I'm looking to implement--having those notes-within-notes is crucial for my writing workflow.

Never ever had that issue with Scrivener.

For writing lengthy projects, I recommend Scrivener. Not sure how much it costs now, but it was a game changer for writing & editing my dissertation. Basically paid for itself. You can upload PDF's and other media (for research & reference) and very easily navigate / manipulate / organize and format big writing projects with no lag or distractions.
