Reddit take

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

Proxmox is a highly regarded open-source virtualization platform, widely praised for its ability to repurpose older hardware into functional servers. It is frequently cited as a top alternative to enterprise solutions like VMware and Hyper-V, offering a Debian-based environment with a native web-based UI for managing virtual machines and containers. While it is a staple in the homelab community, professional sentiment is mixed regarding its readiness for large-scale corporate environments compared to established competitors.

Pros

  • Excellent for repurposing older hardware (e.g., Optiplex, mini PCs) into capable servers.
  • Comprehensive, well-organized native web UI for management.
  • Flexible Debian-based architecture allows for a wide variety of VM and container use cases.
  • Strong community recommendation as a viable migration path from VMware or Hyper-V.
  • High performance overhead efficiency, suitable for running multiple services on a single node.

Cons

  • Virtual machines are often blocked by aggressive e-sports anti-cheat systems (e.g., Valorant, Rainbow 6 Siege).
  • Multi-cluster management tools are considered less mature than enterprise alternatives like vCenter.
  • Some users find the interface and workflow unintuitive or lacking a 'corporate' feel.
  • Documentation is sometimes viewed as less intuitive compared to competitors like TrueNAS Scale.

Caveats

  • Requires a significant initial time investment to learn and configure properly.
  • Professional users recommend purchasing official support for production environments.
  • While it offers more configuration options than TrueNAS Scale, it may be overkill for simple storage-focused needs.

Best for

  • Homelab enthusiasts looking to run multiple services on repurposed hardware.
  • Users seeking a free or lower-cost alternative to VMware/Hyper-V.
  • Small-to-medium scale virtualization clusters.
  • Users who prefer a web-based interface over pure command-line management.

Avoid if

  • Your primary goal is playing e-sports games that prohibit the use of virtual machines.
  • You require enterprise-grade management for a very large number of clusters.
  • You prefer the specific UI and documentation style of TrueNAS Scale for basic server needs.

This summary uses balanced time weighting with about a 6-month half-life. The evidence is based on mentions from early 2025 through early 2026 with a median age of 275 days, reflecting a stable but aging set of observations for this software tool.

All of those features are built into Proxmox, with a clear and well organised UI, natively. Why forsake them?

Turned all my old parts into a server. Runs on proxmox and does all my video and music streaming now. Requires a bit of investment but it's been so worth it compared to the services I had been using.

Proxmox has a few more configuration options and management access aswell as performing a bit better. Truenas scale has a better ui, more intuitive monitoring and settings and (imo) better documentation. In normal use cases theres nothing proxmox does that truenas cant, so if you have a working setup, just stick to it.

If you have the time for it, you could also consider reinstalling the server and switching to some sort of vm-ware like proxmox. I made the switch and its been great for flexibility and a 5500 definitely has the performance overhead needed.

many e sports kinda games afaik do not allow VMs, so for things like Rainbow 6 Siege, Valorant, Rust, whatevs, you're out of luck

Proxmox was by far the most recommended solution.

But if you think that the terminal will be hard for you, you can use other OSes that have web interfaces like proxmox or truenas.

Also, the power draw would be slightly higher because of the Proxmox overhead.
