AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

The Samsung HW-Q990C is highly regarded for its ability to create an immersive "surround sound bubble," particularly in movie-watching scenarios. Users frequently praise its deep, tight bass and clear audio, often preferring the 'Surround' mode over 'Adaptive' for a more natural sound. While it is considered a high-value flagship, some users report mixed results with Dolby Atmos height effects and note that its performance for music is less impressive than for cinema, especially at lower volumes.

Pros

  • Excellent cinematic immersion and surround sound performance
  • Deep, tight, and impactful bass from the included subwoofer
  • Crystal clear audio with extensive settings for user customization
  • Strong value-to-performance ratio compared to newer flagship models
  • Effective performance even in smaller dedicated media rooms

Cons

  • Limited connectivity with only two HDMI ports on the soundbar
  • Inconsistent Dolby Atmos performance, with some users finding it underwhelming
  • Music playback can feel less refined than movie performance
  • Reports of firmware updates occasionally degrading sound quality (e.g., muddy vocals)
  • Bass can feel lacking when listening at low volume levels

Caveats

  • Full performance requires the use of rear speakers and a subwoofer, which may not suit all room layouts
  • Certain features are exclusive to Samsung TV pairings, though core functionality works well with other brands like LG
  • Channel separation may not always live up to the 11.1.4 marketing, with some users describing it as closer to a high-end 5.1.2 experience

Best for

  • Home theater enthusiasts prioritizing movie immersion
  • Users who want a complete surround system without the complexity of a traditional AVR setup
  • Owners of Samsung TVs looking to utilize ecosystem-specific features

Avoid if

  • You strictly do not want rear speakers or a bulky subwoofer
  • You require more than two HDMI inputs directly on the soundbar
  • Your primary use case is high-fidelity music listening at low volumes

This summary uses balanced time weighting with about a 6-month half-life. The evidence is older (median age ~380 days), which is relevant as this model has been succeeded by newer iterations, though it remains a frequent point of comparison in the community.

Had this soundbar for about 8 months, since owning I’ve only ever used Adaptive, as initially it sounded the best. However after switching to surround, it’s SO much better. Everything sounds so much more natural, clear, and immersive.

Parent context: For a non audiophile (like me) something like the LG S70TR for $300 is a damn good system. I tried out the 990c at a friends house and it's way beyond what I'd ever need. Reply: I tried out the 990c at a friends house and it's way beyond what I'd ever need.

I’ve had 2 gens of the Q990. The Q990c and the Q990F series and I did really enjoy them but always felt like I was missing something. It’s a great overall package and at the cheaper price a great value.

I have the Samsung Q990C older model and got a really good deal on it like $700. This thing was worth every penny even at retail at 2K. I use it everyday on my Sony A95L 77” from watching YouTube, sports, TV shows, and movies I like how it’s just a complete system.

I have to connect my blu ray player to my Samsung Q990C soundbar's HDMI 1 port and it can passthrough DTS:X or DTS-HD while being connected to the TV through the eARC HDMI port.
