The Samsung 990D is widely regarded as a high-value flagship soundbar that excels in home theater performance, particularly for dialogue clarity and Dolby Atmos immersion. It is frequently cited as a superior value alternative to the Sonos Arc Ultra, especially when found at discounted partner or EPP pricing. However, its performance is more polarizing regarding music quality and subwoofer impact, where some users find it lacks the refinement of dedicated hi-fi systems or higher-end competitors.
Pros
- Exceptional value-to-performance ratio, frequently available for $680-$730 via partner stores.
- Strong dialogue clarity and center channel performance compared to rivals.
- Immersive Dolby Atmos and surround sound experience for movies and series.
- Q-Symphony integration provides a cohesive experience for Samsung TV owners.
Cons
- Music performance can feel 'flat' or less crisp compared to Sonos or passive speaker setups.
- Polarizing subwoofer performance; some users find the bass 'weak' compared to brands like Nakamichi or Sonos.
- Incremental sound quality improvements over the previous 990F model according to some users and reviewers.
Caveats
- Sound performance is highly dependent on the quality of the source content's audio mix.
- Subwoofer placement is critical to avoid boominess and ensure proper integration.
- Software features are the primary differentiator from the 990F, as raw sound signatures are very similar.
Best for
- Home theater enthusiasts prioritizing movie dialogue and Atmos effects.
- Samsung ecosystem users who can utilize Q-Symphony.
- Buyers with access to EPP or partner discounts looking for a flagship experience under $800.
Avoid if
- Your primary use case is high-fidelity music listening.
- You require the most powerful, room-shaking bass available in the soundbar market.
- You prefer the sound signature of a passive speaker and amplifier setup.

Last time I checked, D was a good and decent soundbar with a woofer.
Parent context: A lot here say JBL’s subwoofer is better than Samsung’s. Reply: It undoubtedly is better as I had the 990D for over a year. 1300X MK2 12” sub is a significant upgrade for bass frequencies.
990’s are so good for the money. I prefer the 990D over the f
I love my 990D. A little better than the 990F I have in my home office/movie room actually.
I have a the 990D with a Sony A80J oled hanging just above it. With my room setup (not optimal-open concept- but works) and my (app) settings, the sound I get from the Samsung system is pretty phenomenal for a all-engaging immersive surround sound.
Samsung 990D
I've done it both ways with no issues (990D).
I have a 990D in an average size room and honestly it's probably too much. I usually keep the volume at 10 and 25 it's really booming.
I also have a 990D and a Nakamichi shockwafe wireless 11.2.6. I can’t believe how far high end soundbar systems have gone there are some awesome ones out there that could seriously replace any AVR system and make the owner satisfied.
I love my 990D in my family room for movies and use my 990f for gaming in my office.
