The Samsung 990 EVO Plus 1TB is generally regarded as a high-performance, premium NVMe drive that occupies a controversial spot in the market. While it is praised for Samsung's brand reliability and its hybrid support for both PCIe 4.0 x4 and PCIe 5.0 x2 interfaces, many users argue it carries a 'Samsung tax.' In community discussions, it is frequently labeled as overkill for gaming, with several alternatives suggested that offer similar real-world performance for a lower price.

Pros

  • Hybrid compatibility with PCIe 4.0 x4 and PCIe 5.0 x2 interfaces
  • Strong brand reputation for reliability and performance
  • Uses TLC NAND, which is preferred over QLC for endurance
  • Often available in high-end hardware bundles at major retailers

Cons

  • High price-to-performance ratio compared to competitors like the WD Black SN850X
  • Negligible benefits for gaming compared to significantly cheaper PCIe 3.0 or 4.0 drives
  • 1TB capacity is often viewed as poor value compared to 2TB variants
  • Potential for higher heat issues associated with PCIe 5.0 technology

Caveats

  • Users frequently mention a 'Samsung tax,' suggesting you pay a premium for the brand name.
  • Real-world gaming performance shows little to no difference from older PCIe generations.
  • Pricing varies significantly by region, appearing particularly expensive in some international markets.

Best for

  • Users who prioritize brand reliability and long-term support
  • Workstation builds requiring high sequential read/write speeds for production
  • Builders with PCIe 5.0 compatible motherboards looking for future-proofing

Avoid if

  • You are building a budget-focused gaming PC
  • You are looking for the best price-per-terabyte value
  • Your motherboard does not support PCIe 4.0 or 5.0

One thing worth noting, the Samsung 990 EVO Plus seems pricey at $164 for a 1TB drive. You could get a WD Black SN850X or Crucial T705 for less and get similar or better performance.

Also you don't need Pcie 5.0 for the SSD. For gaming there is basically no difference feom 3.0 onwards, so just get 4.0, as it's basically the same price as 3.0 and is cheaper with less hest issues than PCIe 5.0.

I just looked at samsung 990 pro and 9100 pro which both have DRAM and are TLC, but they are a tad bit on the higher end of the price spectrum (210 for both, 1TB). What do you think about those?

Looking at building a PC, this is the parts list I'm sitting at, $1700 pre-tax from Microcenter. Is there anything obvious that I'm missing/overlooking?
